Default Credit Card vs. Cash on Cruise

I'll be going on my first cruise ever in May. I was wondering what methods of payments does cruise ships accept. I don't usually carry a lot of cash because I use my debit/credit card for all of my purchases. Does cruise ships accept debit/credit cards or do I need to bring all of my spending money in cash? Also, even if they accept both which method do you think is better? Thanks in advance for your responses!

All ships are cashless and do not use CC/DB cards. They have a card that you use to charge everything to your onboard accout - even the daily tips.

For Carnival it is a Your Sail & Sign Card will serve also as your Boarding Card.

On Carnival, you establish a Sign and Sail account at embarkation to which you charge all on-board expenses. You can use either cash or a credit/debit card to set this up. At the end of the cruise you pay your account balance - again, using either your credit/debit card or cash.

I like to use my credit card to get miles for my cruise! I take some cash, but not a lot.

You can keep track of how much is on your account (and if it is accurate) in your cabin using the in-room account activity screen. Very easy!

Bon voyage!

Thanks for your responses! That's even better. So if I decided to set up my Sign and Sail account with my credit card at the end of the cruise can I choose to pay it with a different credit card or do I have to use the same one?

The one that you set it up with is the one that will be billed.

You can pay cash to pay if off if you like.

If you use your debit card to set it up, they may put a "hold amount" on your card that comes off later. Not so with a credit card.

remember to take cash for the casino and bingo (the atm fee on board is high and also if you take cash out on your credit card in teh casino; they will surcharge your card)

if you use your debit card; which is not recommended, as they do put a hold on the card and the hold make take a couple of days to clear and the hold is usally a large amount, which freezes up your debit card; unless you are Bill Gates and you have like a million bucks available balance

I used my debit card on my cruise. They did not place a large hold on it and it was charged the next day after I got back. Just bring cash for onshore shopping.

That you will be using it on your travels and where you are traveling so it isn't declined due to suspicion of fraud.
