We are thinking about spending the holidays at sea and would love any and all feedback.
Would be traveling with 2 families with a total of 3 teens.
Sailed on the Holiday out of Mobile over this past Christmas. We planned this trip specifically to spend time with DH's son who is in college a couple of states away, we hardly see him anymore, and we figured this would be a perfect way to make sure he would break away from school, his job and his girlfriend, to spend time with dear ole dad over the holidays. Well, it worked
and we had a great time. The ship was decorated for the holidays, but there was no traditional Christmas tree which was a disappointment and not as many decorations as we thought would be up, but some, nonetheless and they were absolutely beautiful. We did take some battery-powered decorations for our cabins and I had snowmen door hangers that we hung on our cabin door to dress them up and give us some extra holiday spirit. We also boxed up some gifts for DH's son, so he had some to open on Christmas day. It is hard to remember that it is the Christmas season when your sailing in Gulf waters and it is 80 degrees outside
Lots and lots of kids on this sailing, which we should have expected since families were traveling all together; hadn't thought about that so we weren't prepared for the younger set which was in force, for sure! This made for lots and lots of the small set all over including the buffet lines, the dining room, the pool area and generally, throughout the entire ship. The crew appeared to take this all in stride, and service still was superb. Parents seemed a little more frazzeled than we have seen on other sailings, and we heard more complaints about the number of small children than on any other cruise, so we weren't the only ones that did not expect this. But, oh well, we still enjoyed ourselves. The weather in the Gulf was horrible - lots of rain, very rough seas, in fact we were supposed to sail to Costa Maya and that was cancelled due to strong under currents, so we spent two days in Cozumel instead of just one and the first day, it rained so hard that water flooded the streets (in excess of a foot, at least!) I know that weather can be hit or miss, but I suspect that maybe that is more common at that time of year in the Gulf; there was rough weather t/o the entire southeastern region of the country, so it wasn't just us. We went on this cruise thinking that the ship would be overflowing with Christmas spirit, people wishing other Merry Xmas, Happy Holidays, etc., but did not see or hear much of that at all so that was a little disappointing as well. When we compare the cost of this cruise to what we would have spent at any other time, it was not worth it. For two inside cabins on the main deck, we spend approx. $2100. Thanks goodness we did not have to deal with airfare, since we can drive to Mobile. But that would have gotten us two cruises at any other time of the year, except maybe prime summer season cruising. So, to sum it up, we are glad we did it, can say we did it, but won't do it again.
