Default Need Help - Shore excursions or on my own?

I am travelling with my daughter 17 and son 14 to the mexican riviera in March. I have not booked any shore excursions. They seem really expensive. Should I just do my own thing. We would like some beach time but also like to see some sites as well. Help please.

I have heard that the ship will not leave a port unless all carnival excursions have returned. If you are on an excursion NOT througyh carnival, you are taking your chances of being left behind due to a broken down bus or taxi, flat tire, or other delays. I'm not going to take any chances.
