Default Government falls behind in passport processing...

Here's a video about this:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/travel...pagetravel-hed

I'm definitely going to do expedited services when I order mine next Saturday, although I'm not cruising until July 29th

My wife applied for her passport using standard service in January. She still has yet to receive hers and we are entering the 13th week now.

We are 'tracking' its progress online and it seems that as soon as the 'you should receive it on this date' approaches, they push it back another week or two. On March 8th it said we should receive it on March 15th. On March 15th it said we should receive it on March 25th.

We leave in September for our next cruise... I certainly hope we receive it by then...

Not to mention they take your birth certificate when you apply and you only get it back along with your passport. She has since needed her birth certificate since applying and we've had to go shell out the $25 fee to get a certified copy of it.

Same here, what started out as the end of February delivery, went to the first of March, now to the end of March. Mine was submitted the middle of Jan. I don't need it until October. I suggest anyone getting one do it far in advance or expedite it. They were not prepared for this.......

$25!! I got it from my local clerk for $12. I used it on our cruise last week.

I paid $13 for each of our b.c.'s and I got 2 of them so we'd have a copy after we sent one off with the passport app.

Getting my Passport in 1989 and renewing it in 1999 was one of the smartest things I did. When I got it in 1989 I didn't need it but it was easy to get so I did.

In 2009 when I need to renew mine the wait should be better. Mine expires in July 2009 so I will probably apply for a renewal in the fall of 2008. I usually don’t cruise in the fall.

You have to get it from the state you were born in, the Office of Vital Statistics. Do an online search for the office in your state. I think I paid 14.00 for two copies from Arkansas.

I had no problem getting mine. Of course, I went to get a passport fairly early on when they first announced the fact that US citizens would need them to get back into the country. I think applying for a passport is the first step one should do when even thinking of going on a cruise or on any vacation anyplace outside of the country. And they're good for ten years (in the US), so if anyone thinks they remotely have a chance of leaving the country even once in the next ten years, they should just go get the passport.

In upstate NY I had to go to the town clerks office of the city / town of the hospital where I was born.

Robert,

My family has also had Passports for a few years now, before they were required BUT I thought that they could be renewed online immediately... Wonder if I'm wrong???? Check online when renewal time is near....

Can't renew on line, only by mail. You have to send in your old passport with the application and money. Also, you cannot travel on a passport that will expire within 6 months of the travel date. So, they are really only good for 9-1/2 years.

I have always kept my birth certificate and a copy of it in a safe deposit box at the bank. That way it doesn't get lost or misplaced. Everyone waited until the last minute to get their passport so the line is long.

A girl that I work with, applied the first week in Jan and just got hers yesterday, after standing in line for 3 hours. Earlier in the week she was on the phone holding for a few hours as well to find out if it was ready.

WOW what a shock! Who could have seen this coming over the past what year and a half that we have been warned that it was inevitable that this was going to happen. They have pushed the date back how many times to give the procrastinators more time to procrastinate? Its not the fault of the government that people have ignored the warnings and in some cases gambled that they could get by with one more cruise without having to cough up the 70 or 80 dollars.

I called Carnival. The 6 month date thing is wrong. As long as your trip is over before it expires you are OK.

With a Caribbean cruise, yes you are OK, but if you are travelling and doing a land vacation, maybe a cruise in Europe, no, it's not. So, to be safe, it's best to renew at least 6 months before it expires.

Here is the info from the State Dept. website:

Some countries require that your passport be valid at least six months beyond the dates of your trip and/or have two to four blank visa/stamp pages. Some airlines will not allow you to board if these requirements are not met.

Everyone should just get a passport. I feel spending the 80.00 is like making a contribution to making North America a safer place for all of us. Delusional? Perhaps........ Even If you do not need the passport right now, just get it. Certainly you will use it in 10 years time. So to make your life easier when travelling and to streamline the immigration and customs porcess just get the passport. Its a wise investment. It boils down to about 8.00 a year over a 10 year period of time. What if that dream cruise pops up at the last minute for the most unbelievable price ever and you cant go because you dont have your passport and the wait is 16 weeeks long?

theere is a online company called Vital Chek that makes it really easy to get birth certificates; but New York is the exception - they take longer and have to have more documentation.... each state has a different price and different requirements

But for some people a passport was something they didn't think they needed. Had my BF not got me hooked on our first cruise last week I NEVER would have applied for mine.

So its not just procrastinators that are doing this, its people who have discovered a need for one that they never thought they would need.

[/b]OK, what I don't understand is that these new passport laws were announced months/years ago and now that the deadlines are here, you'd think that there would be enough staff to process these in a reasonable amount of time. Go figure?

Donna, that would have made waaaaaay too much sense. Maybe the Government didn't think the traveling Americans would get their passports?

My daughter is waiting for her passport for a trip to Ecuador in May. When she applied in early February, she was told to put the date that she was leaving on the application. She was told this would put her application ahead of others with either later dates or no dates.

When my husband and I recently applied for ours, I had mine expedited but my husband did not. When the gentleman asked my husband when his trip was, we told him that a trip was not planned. The post office clerk explained that my husbands could take longer than usual because he was not indicating a departure date on the form. We then changed it to 10 weeks from the date we applied.

I'm assuming that the people who applied but whose trips are in the fall, are being put behind those who have trips coming sooner.

According to the status site mine should be here today. A week ago it said the 28th of the month. Now it has been update to show today as delivery day. I applied for mine on the 12th of January. I also did not have a departure date on mine. I left it blank. I knew I wouldn't need it until the fall. Maybe mine will be in the mail when I get home.
