I have also had that happen to me. My luggage didn't make it to Miami until the next day. I was still worried, since the cruise was leaving the next day...but the luggage was delivered to the hotel by 7am the next morning. I would have missed my luggage if we were sailing out the same day we flew in.
I had an airline somehow "lose" my luggage on a non-stop flight between Newark and Ft. Lauderdale, same day as I was cruising. Since we got to Florida for 9am, that should have left plenty of time...the twelve year old (well, he LOOKED that young) at Baggage claim assured me it would be on the next flight, due in an hour.
Three flights later, no luggage.
Not the way to start an 8 day cruise to the "exotic" western caribbean. I was near hysterical arguing with Continental from my cel phone on the balcony right before the ship left...they not only couldn't tell me where my luggage was, they insisted they had 48 hours to get it to me without penalty.
I will say Carnival was wonderful...I informed them at the pursers desk, they took my info, gave me a credit in the gift shop and for formal wear, told me I was not to worry about anything. When we got to Belize, my bag was there. Considering they hadn't had anything to do with everything that went wrong, I was pretty impressed.
In any event, knowing that I seem to be a magnet for lost luggage, I now always arrive for a cruise at least one day early.
