Default Ecstasy, Progreso, Galveston I have a Few Questions

Hello to all CM'S. We are going to do a 5 day on the Ecstasy out of Galveston next Jan. I have some ?'S. I know it is very early, but you know how it is. If I can't be on a cruise I want to talk about one or plan one.

My first question is Galveston. We will get to Galveston at least one day before we sail. I need to know what the one thing we MUST do in Galveston. I know there are many of you from the The Great State Of Texas on this board so come on give up some of that great info you have.
My next question is what is the best thing to do in Progreso? We are not big on the beach thing( try to keep my shirt on in public as a public service). We like the ruins, that seems to be an opton,. We are open to suggestions from your experiences.
Thanks to all in advance for your help.

Gary& Rox,

If you will go to my virtual cruise that is on my countdown clock thing, you will learn a lot about Galveston.

Progresso is a dock, then a pool that I have never seen with water in it, A shops area that most of the stuff had Cozumel on it. Then to see anything you get on one of the free shuttles, and travel to a small town at the end of the longest d*** pier I have ever seen. That sucker must be two miles long with nothing on it. In the little town is a town time forgot, and a beach that I was told was not that clean.

That's it for progresso TAKE THE EXCURSION TO THE RUINS!!!

For the Progreso port, book a cruise to Chichen Itza. It is an amazing Mayan ruin. It is a 2 to 2 1/2 hour drive by bus, but you will not regret it.

Have a great time on your cruise!

Luanne;
That was a great read. Chock full of info. I am now rethinking my choice on the Ecstacy. May consider the Conquest. My getting off of work for more than a week at a time is the problem. Maybe I can work that out. either way the ruins seems to be the best choice.
Thanks for the info., and insight.

Libragirl;
From what I have read the ruins seems to be the choice here. I will do some more research. That is what it is all about. Thanks for your help. You help alot of people on here, as does Luanne. It is greatly appreciated.

Gary,

We have been on both ships, and have good things to say about both.

Conquest has better ports, I think.

Luanne;
I agree with the better ports for the Conquest. We can drive to Galveston which saves us a ton on airfare. I can do a five day for so little money. if we go on the Conquest I will want a balcony like we had on the Glory. We just need to make some decisions.
Congrats on your Hubby getting home. We appreciate all that he has done for all of us. I am a Viet Nam vet. so I know the drill.
Thanks Again

2 Things you should do in Galveston. Visit Moody Gardens, the aquarium is really nice. Eat dinner at Casey's on Seawall Blvd. The shrimp balls are unbelievable. If you have time, walk around The Strand district before you board the ship.

RRush1969;
That sounds like some things that we would enjoy. We will get to Galveston late afternoon on a Sat. and have all day Sun. to enjoy Galveston. Our cruise leaves on Mon. Just hope things are open on Sun. as this is off season for a lot of places. I do appreciate the info.
Thanks
Gary

We were in Galveston this past January and did all of that on Saturday and Sunday. The beaches are pretty quiet that time of year, but most of the shops are still open. Also fun to take 5 minute drive to end of the island and watch ships pass by. Very relaxing. Many good hotels on Seawall side. Harbor House is cool hotel on port side, and you can see, walk to the Cruise terminal from there.

Well we just got back from our cruise to Cozumel from Galveston and had the time of our lives. It was great. The drive was not that much fun. Kansas to Texas, BLAH! We stayed at the Best Western Beach Front Inn. We visited The Spot (It's a bar). Then were told the next day (before we boarded the ship) that we shouldve checked out The Strand. It's kind of like our Old Town District here in Wichita. We will do that next time. We had SO much fun on the cruise. Felt a lil sick the first two days, but got over it. Can't wait to do it again. You will totally enjoy yourselves.

Heather& Justin;
Glad you made it back safe. Also good to hear you had a good time. I don"t mind the drive down, but hate the drive back. Our daughter, and her Husband moved from Wichita to Austin about 5 yrs. Ago. So we make the trip a couple of times a year. Not much new to see. We are going in Jan next year. I have not made reservations yet. Rush 1969 was telling me abut those places. Sounds like a blast. Look forward to a review on your trip.
Thanks

We went on the same trip this past January. In Progresso we chose to go to the Dzbilchaltun ruins. Only about 20 minutes from port. We really enjoyed them.

I think that is what we will do. From what I hear not much else to do on your own. Did you do the ruins through Carnival? Also do you remember the cost? Thanks for you help.

Gary,

We, too, have visited Dzbilchaltun. They are much closer to the port of Progreso than Chichen Izta, but are much smaller and much less impressive than Chicen Itza. When we go to Progreso, we usually rent a car right on the dock and drive into Merida, or visit one of the ruins. When we drove to Chichen Itza, we had another couple with us who shared the expense of the car and gas. We had a map of the area, but we followed one of the tour buses to Chichen Itza. We've been to at least four Mayan ruins, and these are by far the most impressive.

We have also driven to the Merida town square several times. There is a government building, an old bank building, a museum, a beautiful old church, and the governor's palace there. We had a wonderful time there.

Have fun, whatever you decide to do!!

Libragirl;
I was wondering about doing things with a rental car. Do you have an idea of the costs, and how difficult is it getting around? I have plenty of time to decide on what we are going to do, but want to explore all of our options.
Thanks Again For The Info.

Not through Carnival. My dh speaks fluent Spanish so we ventured out on our own. We were able to get a small touring bus and driver for the 8 of us for $60. A significant savings over the Carnival tours!

Since we hadn't been to ANY ruins, ever, we were duly impressed by what we saw at DZ, but if you're like LibraGirl and have seen others, it might be better to go to Chichen Itza. We didn't want to have to travel too far with cranky kids!

Progresso -- dirty beaches, shopping is pretty cheap compared to cozumel.
Take city tour into Merida, it is gorgeous and you get to see so much history.
The city tour bus through ship was relatively inexpensive. You get to go to the capital government building and it is awesome.

Gary,

I believe we paid about $60 for the rental car. There is room for 4 people in most of the cars. We had another couple with us each time we rented a car, so it was very economical. We had a map of Merida that we probably got on the ship. When you get to the town square, you will need to pull into a parking lot to park. We paid $1 for parking , I think. It was very cheap. It is a very historical town square. We really enjoyed visiting there. We used a parking lot about half a block from the square.

Have fun whatever you do!!!
