Default Cruise Ship Runs Aground - Sinks

April 5, 2007 ORIGINAL REPORT
Santorini, Greece - The cruise ship Sea Diamond, with 1,600 people aboard, is sinking off the coast of the Greek island of Santorini.

The Greek-flagged Sea Diamond issued a distress signal after running aground and is taking on water, according to local news reports.

Passengers were reported to be boarding lifeboats and abandoning the ship.

More than a dozen ships and five navy rescue helicopters are helping with the evacuation effort.

Many of the 1,200 passengers on board are from Germany and the United States, local news reports said.

NOTE: The ship was evacuated and shortly afterward sank.

If it ran aground how is it sinking? It would seem that if it hit ground the water would be too shallow for it to sink.

There are now reports that at least two passengers are missing and presumed dead. According to some passengers, water was entering their cabin so quickly that they almost could not get out.

I'm a newbie here so I don't mean to offend but I have seen several posts on this message board almost dismissing the life boat drills and downplaying the importance of them. I wonder if anyone on the Sea Diamond thinks they were frivolous now?

Just a thought.
Yours aye,

It's tue some make fun of the drills but really I think we all know it is important to know these things. The time to ask "where is my lifevest? " is not when the ship is sinking.

As a former US Navy seaman I have extensive training in this area and I am confident in my survival skills at sea. It is very important to be familiar with life saving measures before anything occurs.

I am just relieved that there are but 2 lost souls, tho 2 too many for the families involved. I heard that the crew were running about franticly, but still the passengers were removed prior to her sinking. Fast action on many persons part was responsible.

I agree with the above poster that we all laugh about the life boat drills, but we know the importance of them. It is no different from being familiar with evacuation routes when in a hotel or a building.
