Next week my husband and I will be sailing on the Glory (we are so excited!!) This will be my third Carnival cruise and his second. I know we have not been on too many Carnival cruises just yet, but I was wondering when they started upgrading at check-in. I have heard of this being done for past guests. Has anyone experienced this? Is there anything I can do/say to get a comp. upgrade? We are in a window stateroom right now, but I would love to get upgraded to anything. Any pointers??
By the time you get to the ship, it is too late for an upgrade unless there is some sort of major snafu caused by the cruiseline. On every ship, at the purser's desk the sign that reads "Ship is Full" is put out to eliminate people who want to play musical cabins. I think your best bet is to call the cruiseline a few days before the cruise and ask if there are any available higher grade cabins available. You will have to pay for them but you may get a break on the price because it is the last minute.
However, at a certain point before the cruise (maybe 30 days), the cruiseline starts to assign the guaranteed cabins and the upgrade fairy does it thing. Repeat cruisers and platinum status cruisers, etc. will get first dibs on the upgrades. What you can hope for is that someone has cancelled at that very last minute and their cabin has not yet been assigned.
Therefore, it is a crap shoot and positive results are not guaranteed.
Good luck and happy cruzin'

Some of the other cruiselines allow up-grades when boarding the ship. I know Princess does allow up-grades. My sister in law has done this before.
I agree with the other posts though, Carnival does not do this at boarding.. The cruiseline will do it a month or 2 before sailing.......

10/2005 after Wilma hit Miami, they were offering upgrades on the Legend which was to sail with only 1/2 the cabins full. The upgrades were priced at around $100.00 - $150.00.
However, this was due to Hurricane weather, and the fact that so many people didn't make it to Miami because of canceled flights, they were offering these upgrades to the empty cabins. I do not think this is normal practice. Or at least I have never heard of it before.
and even though the ship was only 1/2 full, there were still people hogging deck chairs.
We were upgraded when we checked in. I'm sure it was done before we arrived at the port but what a great surprise. We upgraded from an oceanview cabin to a penthouse suite with balcony. This was our first cruise so we were even more shocked that we got an upgrade.
