Default I am in trouble

My wife and I are cruising out of New York City in about one week. I am working on my master's degree in secondary education and I was supposed to take my last final the day our ship sails. Back in January I asked my professor if she would let me take my final a day early. She told me she didn't have a problem with my request and some one in the education department would not mind proctoring my exam. Well today I found out she is being release at the end of the semester because she did not fulfill the college’s requirements. When I reminded her of our arrangement today she told me that if I did not show up for the exam I would get an F. This puts me in a very awkward situation since now I must protest this breech of trust in front of the education department's chairperson. I have never failed or even earned a grade less than a 3.0. I am graduating in six months and am worried about getting an F. Too many people have complained about this adjunct professor and I have wondered if this class should be taken again from the start, but because it is only offered once a year I would have no choice but to wait. I think the college is a little worried about the possibility of having to re-teach the class a second time and tuition cost about $610 a credit. I doubt any one wants to pay up a second time.

If you are already in NYC and is it possible to take your exam that morning and get to the port by 2:00 or 3:00 at the latest? Would you be able to pull it off?
If thats not feasible, I would definitely protest her decision through whatever channels are available to you. Good luck to you.

Good luck ! If that happened to me I think I would loose my mind !
Hopefully if you showed these bureaucrats your tickets, they might get their heads out of the sand ?

I don't think I would put my grades / degree / future in danger.
Take care of your education first. If you have to miss the cruise, it will seem like a huge loss, but may be a small sacrifice in the long run.

that being said.......
I go with plan B....exhaust all options before missing the cruise. Plead your case, if they won't allow the final to be taken early, then see if you can take it that day early morning....and then go directly to the port from the exam.

I can't think of a better way to de-stress after a final exam

I would like to know what was so urgent about taking a cruise that a student in your position would even consider taking a final on any day other than the day it was scheduled. Everyone knows very early on what days their finals are on.
What on earth made you chose a cruise date other than one after finals?
I know a person can ask but you take your chances when you do. I had to take mine ahead of time and take a completely different test than everyone else to get my time off.
I'll bet travel insurance doesn't cover this. You could ask. You did buy travel insurance didn't you?

My wife and I booked this cruise almost a year ago and well before I even registered for my fall semester classes. The class doesn't know when the exam is until we get the course outline. My wife, three children and I have not taken a vacation in two years and will fight this witch. She gave me her word in front of the whole class. Now that she is being released she could care less. I don't stand alone on this matter. Still I am not going to loose $4000 because of her. I have asked to take the exam Wednesday or even Thursday morning but she will not allow me. I must take it at 5:30 pm; one hour after the ship leaves port. The problem is I have another class which begins on May 14th, three days after I get back and I am in school until the end of August with out a break. Then in September I begin student teaching. This is my only opportunity to take a vacation with my family and my professor not only knew about it but approved my request. Lets face it, just because some one is wealthy and is fortunate to receive a formal education does not mean they are any honest or better role models than any one else. They just stink much worse!

badknees I don't think you read the whole thread. If she had told me it was not possible back in January do you think I would have made other plans? After all I booked this cruise back in May of 2006 when the Spirit was supposed to do this run. I graduated from this college with my bachelors degree last year and have never come across any one like her. I also worked for this college up until my graduation and prior to beginning my graduate work. I have to say anyone of my professors would have granted this request with out a word. What is so difficult about that? My GPA is pretty high. I am the last person any one would think of cheating. Not bad for a man who is 41.

Go to the chair of the department and submit your complaint in writing with your request to take the exam a day ahead.

A tip about writing such a letter....don't exaggerate or generalize and pass on making judgments. Just the facts, short and to the point.

As I tell people writing any complaint letter....write it in such a way that the reader can put themselves in your situation. If you get their sympathy, you will get their attention.

I know this has happend to other I know.

Start by going to the chair of your department with a letter in writing. But don't just drop it off, wait there and talk to him/her in person.

If they can not resolve it within 24 hours explain that you will be taking it to the dean of the education college. With this professor's reputation you should have no problem getting resolution to the problem.

Good luck. Let us all know how it turns out. I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you, Carla

Hello everyone. I spoke with the chairperson of the department and they told me not to worry. I can take the exam when I return. It's a great weight off my mind. Now I can pack in peace. For you good people who have kids in college you have to watch what goes on while they attend. If you’re paying for a quality education for your kids, you better make certain you look over the facility of the school. Many times colleges will get adjunct professors who are do not have the best qualifications but are a limited expense on a schools budget. You want your kids to earn more that just a grade. Some professors will assign a grade just to keep their positions.

I am glad it worked out, but if it were me I would have had at least an email from her stating it was OK.

Did you get at least an email from the chair person stating this new time?

Like Linuxpm said, I would get an e-mail or get it in writing stating that this person said it was ok to take it when you get back.

Good luck and let us know how it turned out, both your cruise and your test.

stac2006, glad you were able to work things out. A few years ago my wife was faced with a simular situation. She was the final exam away from receiving her Bachelors in Bus. Admin. The day of the final we were in Miami waiting to board our ship. She made arrangments with the Prof. and she was able to take the final. She took her laptop and took the exam while we were in the middle of the Caribbean ocean. It all worked out. I kid her about it from time to time. 8)

I am happy it worked out for you. I'm sure your good record with the school helped your case. I applaud you for going back to get a degree to do what you want.

I did the same exact thing except my class was an online health class and for the final you had to meet with the professor for a fitness evaluation. On his sylubus he stated that the appts for this would be from May 2nd to May 8th so I plan my cruise knowing we would be back on the 3rd. Well he emails a couple days ago saying to book our appts on the 1st or 2nd that all grades have to turned in by the 2nd!!!! Well lets just say I'm NOT missing my cruise!!! I may have a C but oh well!!!! Good luck with your situation I hope you can figure something out!!!!

PS Sometimes we still like to believe we can keep a person at their word! I would've done the same thing!

Thanks everyone for all your good will. I can't wait to get away. I have written so many papers I am sick and tired of the thought of doing another with out a little rest. I am glad I will not have to take another class with this horrible professor. It is finished.

One option would be to fly to the first cruise stop but that could involve airline issues, cruise line issues etc.

Don't think I would have taken the chance at trusting the word of someone that couldn't guarantee the early exam.

Hello everyone. I just want you all to know that I took my final exam this morning and found it very easy. I am pretty sure I earned at least an A-. I thank you all for your understanding. Now I can rest and enjoy the eight days I will be spending on the Miracle staring tomorrow. I am also glad I had so many people working on my behalf at the college. One more semester and I will have my Master's degree in secondary education and initial New York state teaching certificate.

BRAVO!!!!!
And congrats on all of the above. It is great when a seemingly unsolveable problem is worked out.
Enjoy your cruise. You earned it.

Hello Brain. I live in Rockland County which is about 40 miles north of NYC. To get to me all you need do is cross the GWB and travel on the Palisades parkway until you get off at exit 13.
