Default How "Bad" did they treat your luggage?

I just bought DD a new set of pink polka dot luggage. I know how airlines treat your bags. Any recent cruisers have luggage issues? I'm wondering if I should Scotchguard these bags. What do you think?

Melody

Edit: I never worried about it before because our luggage is black! Now how dirty can that get

We had no problems that I noticed! But then again, my bags were already fairly beat up from flying lol However I think the bulk of the damage from flying comes from loading it onto the planes and the ramps they use. I could be completely wrong though. Never hurts to scotchguard

On our last cruise we had red luggage and they were not marked up at all. Even the airlines were gentle this time!

On our last trip we started with new luggage. They now have broken wheels and are somewhat deformed. They have about one more cruise left in them. Most of the damage came from the airlines I believe. I am thinking that I didn't get the best luggage, but what a deal.
Enjoy

Hey Slug!

I usually could care less about my luggage, but she just had to have the pink polka dot set......It wasn't expensive, but I was hoping it would at least get her to college in August! I guess I'll Scotchguard it!

You know everyone has black or red luggage.....here is my tip.....I go to the store and buy "curly ribbon bows" for each bag (all the same color), the brighter the better! Duck tape that to the handle and it's not gonna come off! You can spot your bag, and usually, the bag guys group them together for you to claim!

Melody;
I tied some yellow crime scene tape to mine. The plastic stuff they use to cordin off a crime scene. I have a friend thats an officer here. He hooked me up. People left it alone, and was easy to spot. Just another idea. I hope he doesn't find out about my soda theft.

Hey Slug!

Crime scene tape, huh? Good idea! Now, for speedy delivery....should we get a sign from the Red Cross and duck tape it to the luggage? Or maybe......a medical sign that says.....organ transplant equipment....deliver promptly!

I had no reason for luggage until this January. I found a super sweet deal at Bentley for luggage and snapped up a 25" and a 20" (although I should have bought two 25") fo $80 Canadian! The sale was for 60% off and was all through December, so late in December I went and bought them. My mother, who I travelled with (she's in her late 60's) also bought luggage for around the same price too.

I bought a nice bright blue and my mother bought a darker blue set. by the time we arrived in Miami my luggage was fairly dirty, mom's was perfect still. On the way home the luggage fared better, but was still dirty. My luggage was used again three weeks later when my brother went away and now looks well worn, even thought I have only had it for six months....

I use the bright colored tape that land surveyors use to mark property. I use three different colors on each handle.

The last time we flew, all the luggage was sitting out in the rain, waiting to be loaded into the plane. Needless to say, all our clothes were wet.

Have a great trip,
Kathy

I got a new set of pink luggage for christmas....after our cruise and having it go through the airlines......all marked up with black marks, one wheel was broken...the things we tucked in the outside pockets were flat as pancakes....yes,it took a beating I would say. BUT we didnt care because we loved our cruise so much that nothing bothered us!

Okay, since we are all friends here....I've decided to share this tip my TA just gave me for locating your luggage amongst other luggage. She suggested purchasing those nylon net balls we use for bathing and looping that through the handle....sturdy!......Obvious!!!! I thought it was a great idea!

My luggage was inspected by Homeland Security in Fort Lauderdale and the bas-beeeeeeeeep-stards didn't repack it the same way and when I got home one of the three bottles of vanilla leaked. Fortunately, the bottles were sealed in a ziplock bag. My bottle of rum wasn't rewrapped in a shirt like I had it so it could have broken open, but it didn't.

Luggage looked like hell, doesn't look brand new anymore......

Remember the old Samsonite or American Tourister (I can't remember which it was) where the adult chimpanzee attacks the luggage. That is what I always envision will happen to mine. I think mine has been attacked a few times.

Because of this I try not to buy "cheap" luggage or extremely expensive luggage. At a close out sale, I recently purchased a Polo, rolling garment bag and it is the worst, luggage purchase I have ever made. The thing is a piece of crap. I have used a Samsonite garment bag for 15 years and it has about a half million miles on it.

Luggage will always become scuffed or dirty in travel. Now with TSA regulations you never know if and when it will be inspected so buy luggage that has wheels that don't stick out and in a color that isn't black and mark it with something that sets it off from the rest. Pack things that leak in ziploc bags and keep them to a minimum. When marking, so you can identify it, don't tie something "Huge" to the handle. At some time, it will probably get stuck in the conveyor belt and be ripped off or pull the bag off the conveyor and it won't be there when you get off the plane.

Baggage handlers work hard but can miss things or the bag can be pulled off the belt and it can be placed back on the wrong belt, especially "after" it passes the bar code scanner.

Take care,
Mike

I've never had any problem with our checked luggage, but,,it too is old and black. I have leather "Kenneth Cole" luggage that I use for my carry aboard, and I'd NEVER check that one. I absolutely know they'd tear it up in a heartbeat!

I was sitting aboard an airliner which had pushed back from the gate many years ago, and we'd sat there for quite some time. The captain came on the intercom, and announced the following:

"Ladies and Gentlemen, we apologize for the delay. The machine that rips the handles off your luggage has broken, and we are having to do it all by hand!" Needles to say, the entire plane broke out in laughter, and the tension was broken. Good pilot, and I remembered the line!
