Default Best/cheapest way to talk to call home.

My friend and I are going on a cruise this July. This will be her first and she has a three year old whom she has never left before. She is wanting to call/recieve calls to/from home. What is the cheapest way?

They don't have internet or she could email them, plus she want wants to say "hello" to her little boy.

Her husband could call the ship but I know that can be expensive.

What do you reccomend? Thanks in advance!

Each port has pay phone where you can buy phone cards. This is by far the cheapest way to call home. Call from the ship is very expensive.

People are also starting to use cell phones at sea. Check with your carrier about prices for this.

Hope this helps.

We sailed a couple weeks ago and we used our cell phone. We have Verizon and it was around $3.39 a minute. Nice to say hi but don't talk too long each time. I also noticed our caller ID worked at sea so if it was not a call I wanted to answer I didn't.

Just got off the Legend last month, used my phone once and it was $2.49 a minute on my bill. I have Verizon.

Most cruise ships are now equipped to handle cell phone calls, unlike in the past. Phone cards from pay phones in some ports are fairly cheap (especially Bermuda).

Yeah the port option is good but if you are at sea several days you are out of touch.

It is and I don't know about other cruise lines but Carnival's is too slow, guess it's their way to make more money as they charge you by the minute.

I think you are correct. They might slow it down to ring up more minutes... We sailed a couple weeks ago and my cell bill was only $70 for checking in at home. Well worth the money...

We were on the Freedom in the Mediterranean and we used a Cingular GSM phone to text people. It was pretty cheap and worked most of the time except when at sea.
