Default upgrade from inside to balcony

I am sailing on Glory in September and we really want a balcony stateroom and I called Carnival today to see how much it would cost and it was $350 more pp. Ouch. Do you think if i wait until a couple days before the cruise that the upgrade would cost less. It probably doesn't help that I purchased oour inside @429pp and at last check it is up to 509pp for an inside. thanks for the help.

I thought about when we are checking in pleading for an upgrade.

Can you live with what you have now? If so, wait until a couple of weeks b4 the cruise and call and see what is available. Realize that by then you will not being getting the best balcony but you will probably get it for a decent price, if any are available.

If you can't live iwth what you have now, just pay the difference and pick a good balcony cabin. If you pay now, you will get a better cabin/location.

It is up to you.

Have you had a balcony before? If you have you know the difference. It is well worth the extra money if you can afford it.
If you are really pining for a balcony do it now. Don't wait until there aren't any left or you get a less desirable one. Like one with a connecting door when you aren't using the other one for your own family or friends.
We are leaving Sat. for an 8 day cruise. We booked 2 months ahead and had a choice of only 3 cabins with balconies. Don't wait unless you don't mind missing out on a balcony. The fact that the price has gone up says to me that cabins are selling well.
What ever you decide have a great time.

We have always sailed inside cabin, but I thought it would be nice to get a balcony if we could. I will wait until right before. If it fills up then we will still have a great time in our inside cabin

That is probably a good idea because once you've gotten a balcony you may never want an inside cabin again or even just a window.

Next time before you book, check into getting a balcany cabin guarantee cabin. You can save a few dollars, but you won't know the exact cabin until closer to the cruise. If for some reason they run out of them, you'd get an upgrade, so its always worth trying that.

$700 will buy a lot of pina coladas! I think you are doing the right thing. If the balcony works out, O.K., and if not, for your next cruise, just plan way ahead, save your money, and book a balcony guarantee in the first place. Every sailing we've done lately has been a "Full Ship" so cruizin' has become very, very popular. I know you'll have a great time, whether you sail in your inside, or get the balcony.

I am under the impression that if Carnival upgrades it is apples to apples, interior to higher deck interior, etc. I also believe they try to upgrade their Platinum members before everyone else.

On Carnival I have been up-graded from an interior to ocean view once and also from an ocean view to a balcony once.
One never knows!

On the Glory, a balcony stateroom is nothing more than an outside cabin with a balcony crafted on. I sailed the Liberty recently and, while it was nice, the balcony stateroom was nothing compared to the balcony suites we used to get upgraded to on the Paradise, which did not have these balcony staterooms.

Nonetheless, I will tell you a technique that has resulted in our being upgraded on five of our six cruises - take the category guarantees and simply hope. It particularly works if you are a past Carnival guest.

On our first cruise, we wanted an outside cabin and so selected one. On the second cruise, we booked a 4A guarantee and got a 6B cabin. Next cruise was a 4B to a 6C. After that, I wanted a stateroom, so I booked a 6C and a 6D and both times got a category 12 stateroom. All of these upgrades were on the Paradise. When we sailed the Carnival Legend this past January, we booked an outside cabin and got a balcony stateroom.

Good luck.

thanks for everyone's help. Our next cruise after this one will be to the Panama Canal. My Fiance was born in Panama. (His parents are in the air force) So we decided to go there on our honeymoon. We will get a balcony for that cruise for sure. I am upset because Carnival doesn't have a ship that goes to Panama! I am pretty sure we will do a Princess Cruise.

Patiently waiting four our Eastern C. Cruise!!!!!!

Lou 123;
I see you couldn't wait either. I see you booked the Ecstasy for Nov. What type of cabin did you book? Just curious to see how this up-grade thing works for us next year. We did a 1-A guar. it is of course the cheapest. If we end up with that it will be OK. It is only a 5 day. When we do a 7 day or longer I want a balcony. I guess we will just have to wait and see if the up-grade fairy is watching.

We are leaving on Carnival Liberty, 8 nights, from Port Everglades, Ft. Lauderdale, tomorrow, destination Panama. It does not go through the canal if that is what you meant. But we are signed up for a tour that takes you from Colon, where we dock, to the Pacific side and then we take a ferry back through some of the locks. Is that not what you wanted to do?
I have always wanted to do a cruise through the locks and around to San Diego stopping at Cabo San Lucus but my husband said this will have to do until he retires as those trips take longer.
I think I will be happy seeing the canal and how it operates and taking the ferry through.
We are very excited.

GaryI,
You are right, we had to book another cruise even though we are going again in April of 2008. We decided if we are doing a second cruise this year that we needed to keep it cheap so we booked an inside G but with the past guest rate we got a room on the 4th level away from the galley.. The only balcony's on this ship are suites a little over $1,000 a person. I got my room for $326 a person and didn't think an extra $700 a person was worth it... We can also drive to Galveston (only 1060 miles) and save some money. Except gas is up to $3.10 a gal today!
We are doing a 7 day in April out of Miami..........

Lou;
I agree that we will drive there too. It's only 700 mi. for us. I got the 1-A guar. for $519 for DW and Myself with the Mil. disc. which makes for a cheap cruise. My only concern is the Galley location and hope we don't get right below it. I asked about the Conquest for later next year. I don't think there is a Mil. disc. on it. Waiting to find out. I really want a balc. again, but just need to wait.
I think we are def. hooked

I think your best bet would be to call and talk to a Vacation planner for Carnival. Tell the person what you are looking for and then they can give you the information and then you can look it up online at your leisure.
I look around a lot on the Carnival site for cruises I might be interested in and don't remember how I came across this one because there is no listing for Panama. It was Eastern or Southern Caribbean I believe. So I can see where you would have trouble finding it.
There are a lot of cruise ships that don't fit through the canal because they have gotten so large. I know the canal is working on a new and wider canal but I don't know if we will see it in our lifetime.
