Wow. I'm impressed.

The one thing I didn't notice was the 2 prong extension cord. I hear there is only one outlet that is very limiting for charging stuff like IPODS and gameboys.

If your son is like mine you might add that to the list of things not to forget.

Because she will be taking her son out of the country, and might need to prove custody. You might get a signed statement for your son from his father. Probably the only time it would be asked for is if a child has gone missing, and there are reports that the child has been removed from the country.

I like your list, and kept hoping i could add to it, but it is so complete, I can't think of anything.

michellet1959;
WOW!!!
Now maybe I missed it, but the only thing I can think of is a plug expander/power strip. If it is on the list and I missed it, I apologize. You will need it as there is only one outlet in your cabin.

Great list , and you are probobly better prepared for your cruise than anyone in the History of cruising. I am not making fun of you. I am saluting you for your diligence.

Yes Luanne, I'm divorced and have full legal custody and since I went back to my maiden name, we have different last names. And I think I do have a 6-outlet powre strip on the list. Have many things that will need tobe plugged in/charged!

I'm hopelessly anal when it comes to organizing my life and I love my lists! I'd be lost without them and without my pda.

Michelle -

One thing you might add is an expired credit card (if you have one) to use as your safe lock.

The safes on Carnival have you use a card with an electronic stripe as the mechanism for locking. While you are on the ship, they recommend that you NOT use the Sign & Sail card to lock the safe, so you will need a second credit card in your "carry it with you on board" stash. I use an old gas credit card for this purpose - if I lose the credit card, it really can't be used by anyone to give me hassles.

Something to consider.

My kids and I have valid passports, do you still need your divorce agreement? Plus I still have my ex-husbandsa last name.

I figured it doesn't hurt to have a photocopy of the agreement with me. It's only 2 pages double-sided, will easily fit in with the rest of my travel docs.

I said what I did, not wanting to scare anyone. It has happened before when an Amber alert has been called, and they check the ports for children leaving. Most likely you will not need any extra paperwork.

I also bring a small sewing kit with safety pins, small zip ties and small room deodorizer. I also have one of those all in one knives that has different size screw driver heads, etc.

For meds/first aide stuff, I also bring Airborne, benedryl tablets, dayquil, nightquil, advil gel caps, tums, neosporine, mosquito repellant, benedryl lotion or cortaid (I'm allergic to mosquitos and if I get bit, the site swells up and hurts). Keep the aloe gel in your refrigerator or on ice, really helps soothe the sunburns.

I keep all of this stuff and more in my overnight bag year round. I check periodically to make sure dates are not expired on drugs and replace if they are. Whenever I go away it's always ready and I don't have to keep repacking it.

Just looked over your list again and saw dramamine. I take bonine instead as it does not make you as drowsy as dramamine does.
I also take antibacterial lotion and bring individual packets of kleenex. When we went to the mexican riviera last year, not all of the bathrooms have soap or tp.

MTSFP: thanks, I'll bring along an expired video club card or something
for that purpose

jokadah: thanks I'll add some meds and my ltiny travel sewing kit as well
and I have one of those utility knifes too - my son and I have been on boqats before and have never gotten seasick, but if bonine is less drowsy I'll bring that along, just in case - great tips about kleenex, I forgot that just cause it's not cold season, there are horrid restrooms all over!

And . . . when we went to the Mexican Riviera last year, I switched my Verizon phone to International Dialing. Here was the problem, when I tried to dial, I kept getting a recording in Spanish. I don't speak Spanish and never understood what they were saying. I finally found a fellow passenger to translate. Find out from Verizon what you have to do to place a call or how to find and operator that speaks english. It was very frustrating.
I'm going to Europe this year and will be in three different countries so I hope to get the information before I go this time.

Michelle -

Be careful where you pack the sewing kit. Although they have relaxed the rules somewhat, they may still not allow you on board with small scissors. Check the TSA website to be sure, so you do not risk losing something at the security checkpoint.

Michelle -

I was looking at your packing list and have a couple of other suggestions.

First, I am not sure if you have enough cash or not - for a seven day cruise, my wife and I usually take around $400 cash. Getting cash using the onboard ATM can be very expensive.

Second, let me suggest that you consider packing one "dressy" outfit in your carryon. Although it only happens rarely, things do go wrong with getting the luggage on board. On one cruise, we met a lady whose luggage got board on the wrong cruise ship.

In fact, to the extent that you can, pack whatever you can in your carryon. Assuming that you are paying full fare for Ian, you are allowed one carryon and one "purse" per passenger. Usually, we take a carryon and backpack each, which lets us carryon quite a lot.

All of the stuff that I pack, it in an overnight bag which gets checked in with the rest of my luggage. So the small utility knift and scissors in sewing ket are not a problem. I don't think they let you bring the small travel size shampoos in your carryon on either which is another reason I check it.

mtsfp:

I plan on using credit cards and only want to bring enough cash to pay the excursion guide tips, porter tips, etc. I suppose for a 4-day I should also have $100-200 extra just in case, thanks, I will do that!

I'm not planning to dress for formal night and nice capri pants with a nice top should be fine for dining room the other nights. We will probably only eat dinner in the dining room 1-2 times and lunch 1-2 times out of the 4 anyway. I plan to do room service for the 4 breakfasts as we'll have early excursion times, and eat at the casual buffets, Lido restaurants mostly.

I'm still debating us each having a backpack and carry-on. I'll make a final decision probably in June, when I do a "test pack." Part of me doesn't doesn't want to deal with how much shampoo I can pack into a carry on, so I'm happy having one carry on with essentials (including one extra set of clothing for each of us) and the rest in a suitcase. We will have a stop over both days and I can't see us both schlepping a carry-on through the airports.

And of course, if we do just carryons, then I would not bring the utility knife and sewing kit.

Such good ideas, thanks so much for sharing. It really gets you thinking, and helps you plan much better. However, a divorce aggrement. Now I have heard it all.

Thanks everyone!

If you are taking a child out of the country, you need either a letter of consent from the other parent or a divorce degree stating that you have full custody.

I have a friend that travels out the country frequently. She has been ask for the letter several times. My son was questioned by a custom agent in length once. He was about 12 at the time. His first question, is this your Mom AND YOUR Dad.

Great list. Looks very much like ours.

I hope one of the pens you pack is a highlighter. Great for the kids camp caper as well as the caper. We always review with the kids the activities they would like to participate in and we highlight. Then each night we highlight what we will be doing and give to the kids for their info. Works great with the teens traveling with us.

Also, for the room safe we usually bring one of our grocery store discount cards. They work just as well as an old credit card and you don't have the risk of someone getting ahold of your old cc info.

Never though of the grocery store card - make sure that it has an electronic strip though. Around here, the cards are using bar codes.

As for the old credit card, we use a gas card. Not much danger there, IMO.

I called Carnival and they said as long as your kids have passports, that is all you need. In order to get a passport for the kids, if you are divorced, you have to get consent from the father, which he did give consent and he knows we are going on a cruise.

I have sole custody so I didn't need my ex's approval for the passport or anything. In fact, he needs to get MY approval anytime he travels over the border with our son. I just figured since we have different last names I will bring a copy of the divorce papers as well as our birth certificates and passports. Under Joint custody, I believe you hae to get each other's approval when it's leaving the country and, in some cases, when you leae the state with your child. Each divorce agreement is different based on where you live and the laws there and what you agreed to.

When traveling with a minor and both parents/legal guardians are not cruising, we strongly recommend bringing an original signed letter from the absent parent/legal guardian authorizing the minor to travel with you. This will expedite processing by the Department of Homeland Security. Please note that a notarized letter to this effect is required if debarking with children in Mexico.

In addition to the above requirements, all guests 16 years of age or older must provide an official photo IDs.

It sounds like lf at least one parent is travling with the kids passport is all you need.
