Default NOT CARNIVAL.... EMPRESS OF THE NORTH????

Sorry but just wondering... anyone know what company this ship is with and what is going on in Alaska?

CNN says its taking on water and they're evacuating 200 passengers... We'll pray that they all make it off ok but I was wondering... how big is that ship, what company owes them and what really happened that they're taking on water?

Thnx Gary....

this is what CNN has reported...

Cruise ship runs aground, evacuated off Alaska
POSTED: 9:23 a.m. EDT, May 14, 2007
Story Highlights• Empress of the North carrying 281 people
• Ship hit rock southwest of Juneau
• No reports of injuries
Adjust font size:
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) -- A cruise ship ran aground off the Alaska coast and was taking on water early Monday as more than 200 passengers were being transferred to nearby ships, Coast Guard officials said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The Empress of the North, carrying 281 passengers and crew, was listing 6 degrees after hitting a rock at the southern end of Icy Strait, about 15 miles southwest of Juneau, said Petty Officer Christopher D. McLaughlin at the Coast Guard base in Kodiak.

A Coast Guard aircraft and helicopter were dispatched after an emergency radio message came in from the ship at 12:35 a.m., McLaughlin said.

Over the following hours, passengers were transferred from the Empress of the North to fishing vessels and other cruise ships that were in the area.

"Many Good Samaritan boats on scene are taking off passengers," he said.

It wasn't immediately clear why the ship ran around, McLaughlin said.

The Empress of the North is operated by Majestic America Line of Seattle. The ship has 112 staterooms, a three-story paddlewheel and galleries featuring Native American masks and Russian artwork, including Faberge eggs, according to its Web site.

The American-built ship is billed by the company as the only overnight paddlewheel vessel in use on Alaskan cruises. It also is used on cruises on the Columbia River between Washington state and Oregon.

Elaine515... the cruise ship was a paddle wheeled boat.

I also see where the story in your post says it was unknown why the ship ran "around"...

I love how the news is calling this a "Cruise Ship" it looks like the riverboats I see on the Mississippi river.

Got to have that headline! I guess Cruise ship mishaps get people's attention these days!!

It is a riverboat. The company advertises this is the only ship used to cruise in the open sea from Seattle to Juneau as a wheeled paddle boat. Normally they are used on river boat cruises. I am happy to hear everyone got off the boat fine, but I have to wonder about the captain and why he ran the ship into a rock. The waters in that area are very well charted and much larger cruise ships navigate them on a daily basis all summer long without any problems. It sounds like a lack of paying attention to the maps they should have on boat.

Don't they require a pilot to be on board when going through shallows, or is it different with these types of boats?

In those waters it is a known fact that the rocks sometime just jump right in front of ships. They have been warned not to do that but completely disregard all rules. Let's hope they never unionize....

Two drunks in a rowboat could run aground on a sandbar and the news media would have you thinking the Titanic all over again.
They can't wait for something to happen with regards to anything remotely resembling a cruiseship.
