Default end of cruise gift for room steward

I was wondering what sort of things room stewards appreciate the most - i.e. do they like (can they use) pre-paid long distance phone cards? Carnival dollars to buy things on the ship? Cold hard cash? Ordering a wonderful last evening meal for them from room service?

I take them money and books. They seem to appreciate both.

There are going to want cash. I would not be happy if my boss gave me some phone cards for my end of year bonus.

Cash mostly. I once handed my steward a $20 bill and a almost full bottle of liquor. He was happier about the liquor than the $20.

Nothing bulky b/c their living quarters are tight. Calling cards may have been done to death. The novel you finished reading on the cruise is usually good.

Anything you don't want to lug back home, just leave in your room. If it is something that any of the crew can use or may want, I am sure there is an "Orphan Items" pile down in the crew's quarters.

On our last cruise, My husband and I had bought cheapo sun hats on one of the islands. My husband ask our cabin steward if he want them, the steward took them. The next day - the last day. He said his girlfriend really like my hat. He thanked us over and over again. Of course, he got his regular tip too.

I am a Diet Coke addict. When I went on a girl's cruise, my friends talked me into taking a few 6 packs on with (stupid- never do that again!). At the end of the cruise i left at least a 6 pack!

I have never left books. Never thought they would enjoy reading books in English. Next time, I will leave those too!

I think reading is probably a great way to improve their understanding of the American lingo, slang and sentence structure.

May sound silly but. When I pack for my cruise I buy the little travel size bottles of tide and downey and dryer sheets. I also buy a set for my room steward. I usually bring a small basket and put the laundry stuff and some dove bars, reeses cups, small token from where I am from usually a keychain and a envelope with their name on it with a extra cash tip usually between $50 and $100 depending how service was for the week. I also leave the tips on my S&S as well. I have also been known to put a disposable camera in the basket too incase they might want to take pictures to send home.

Yes, Mehawk is right! They want cash. If you give them something else they'll certainly "act" like they love it, but the best thing to give is $$$. Then they can buy whatever they want on the ship or off.

I bet most of them would appreciate cold hard cash the most. And the phone card is a nice idea too, as many of them are a long way from home. But cash would be my bet.

it seems cash is probably best besides any personal items I might want to give them. perhaps I'll do cash plus a ship gift certificate for their own onboard account - after all they need to buy things from the staff store.

Here's my 2 cents worth.......Cash is OK, but remember when the ship is docked they can't get off to shop because they're prepping and cleaning rooms, ect. A lot of cruise lines don't allow food brought into crew quarters Also phone cards require a land line to use.
I like to get little surprise gifts for each evening to leave on the bed. Things like bite sized candy bars, notepads, chap-stick, gum, small stationary items, ect. I also wrap each item in tissue paper and make sure the steward's name is clearly written on the package. Of course I tip as well, but I usually pre-pay and give everyone a credit slip. The cruise line will keep track of all tips and a check will be cut at regular intervels.

Cash, cash and cash.

I personally think that leaving a "gift" for someone you know nothing about isn't such a great idea. Calling card? What if they don't have a family? And I think the same thing can be said of all gifts.

Did I say cash? 8)
