Default carry-ons and embarkment/debarkment

if you only have airplane size carry-ons and no "must be checked-sized"
suitcases, can you just bring them on and off the ship yourself?

Yes, if your luggage fits thru the scanner when you go thru Security, you can carry it on. Your luggage has to be no more than 24" wide x 16" high (no restrictions on length). If your luggage doesn't fit thru the scanner, they will ask you to check it with the Porter and you'll have to go outside the terminal again to do this. As far as debarkation is concerned, if you can carry off all your luggage without assistance, you will be allowed to disembark prior to the other guests.
