Default Liberty 6/7 cancelled our port

Just got back from the Liberty on June 9. LOVED the ship and ports. But I was very dissapointed that we couldn't dock in Costa Maya on June 7 because of VERY windy conditions. I understand that it was not possible to go there that day, but it would have been nice if we went to an alternative port the next day. Instead we got another day at sea, with alternative activities, and they credited everyone $25 for their port charges. A crew member told us that it was up to the captain as to whether or not we go to an alternative port. I did research and there were no other ships at Key West that day, so I wonder why we didn't go?

Hi Florida,
That does happen sometimes, like in Grand Cayman, which has happened to me too. It also happens sometimes when going to private islands, not much the captain can do, he's got the ships safety in mind, along with all the passengers and crew.

that happened to us once in Jamaica - but it didn't bother me. Just saved me money from the excursion and another lovely resting day at sea! I LOVED Costa Maya - loved the huge pool area, the bar right by the pool and all the shops right along that area. You don't even have to leave the dock to have a good time!

I think the reason why you did not go to Key West is that a cruise passenger can not disembark from a US port after having visited another US port immediately preceeding (I think I got that right). This rule is why cruise ships that visit Key West always visit somewhere afterwards before returning to the mainland.

Hi Cheryl,

It's because of the "Passenger Service Act" or the "Jones Act". Here's a link to the explanation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passenger_Services_Act

IMO, this "act" is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen , but that's the way it is !

Costa Maya was my favorite port on our Liberty cruise. Took the bus to Majahual and spent the day at Pez Quadro and the great beach there with restaurant and bar. Great prices, great beach massages (dirt cheap). I would disagree with anyone who says you didn't miss much.

Cozumel is nearby. But it's possible that either there were too many ships already docked there or that the same conditions existed.

I see the Liberty won't be doing Costa Maya soon. That's a shame. I think Carnival is moving that other ships.

they also probably wouldn't reroute to a port that has higher port fees - so between the silly "Act" mentioned above; the fact that Cozumel has limited docking space and the higher port fees, the only thing left is driving in circles for day...

I used the unplanned "sea" days as a good excuse to do absolutely NOTHING!.... explore the ship and wander aimlessly......

Cheryl, welcome to Maritime laws. Many people on here don't own any boats & therefore would not know the rules.

Not so, the Jones Act does not apply or affect this situation at all. 8)
