Default DO YOU TIP THE PRIVATE TOUR GUIDES?

This may sound silly, but I am not sure since my family and I never took a private tour, we always usually book with Carnival and we tip the bus driver or tour guide.

Ok hear it goes, my family and I booked 2 private tours so far, one with Lawrence of Antigua and one with Herod Stanislas in St. Lucia. I think they work for themselves, so here is my question, when we pay them at the end of the tour, do we give them a tip, and if we do how much? I would think so, but I am not sure, since the money we paid them goes to them anyway, I think. Please help, so I don't look dumb or cheap, because I am really not.

I am a tipping fiend! I/we tip in general because we see so many who do not tip even though sometimes it is "expected". Like, I see people not tipping porters. I think that is expected. I see poor tipping at restaurants. That IS required when the service is even just standard (and not included). So it goes without saying, l/ we tip the driver and the tour guide. The driver gets half of what we tip the tour guide...and usually the guide gets 10% or more....we also round up. We are not rich, generous to a fault, we'll give up something like a souvenirs to tip someone who has done a great job esp in a country where the standard of living is well below our own. JMHO.

The standard for tipping in Antigua is 15%, the standard in St. Lucia is 10%.

This is my rule of thumb for private tours:

If the tour guide is an employee of the tour company and delivers a good tour I will tip them around 15% to 20% of the cost of the tour.

If the tour guide is the owner of the tour company I "may" tip them.

The employee is paid a wage that is based on the cost of the tour and in almost all instances the owner expects the guide to be tipped.

If the owner conducts the tour all profit will go directly to them and no additional money would be required. If the owner goes outside the scope of the tour or accommodates my requests or special needs I will tip or compensate them.

If an additional driver is involved I will tip them accordingly depending on how involved they are in the tour. Usually this is 10%.

Take care,
Mike

What about tours booked with Carnival? Is it customary to tip on those tours or is that part of the price?

I tip them. They are looking out for you.
