Default tips for Verizon users:

I had Verizon turn on international roaming this week, it's free. Call custom service (*611 from your cell phone) to have them do that for you at least a day before you cruise. Text messaging is NOT included, just voice calls. That means that my Verizon service will work on board the ship and it will cost me $2.40 per minute - much cheaper than the $6-7 for the cabin phone for the 1 minute calls I'll let my son make to let his dad (my ex) know he's alive and well) each night on the ship. If he wants, he can email his dad with more details.

Because we're going to be flying in the day before the cruise and flying home the day after the cruise, we need to have the cell with us anyway. I was also told that if I'm on the phone while the shop is leaving any port, the call will likely be cut off until we reach international waters. Keep in mind also that if calls go to voicemail, you will have to call the international country code for the u.s. - 011 - to connect. I should call 011 then my area code and phone number (i.e., 011-847-xxx-xxxx) to call my line, press # when I hear my greeting and then enter my voicemail password to check my voicemail.

Also, at least a week before you cruise update your roaming software.
Dial *228 to update your roaming capabilities.

So if I pick Bahamas in the window the rate is a $1.29.

So it looks like it would be much cheaper to call off the ship in port.

yes, so it appears, but my son would have to call his dad in the evening, it's difficult for him to talk at work, so we won't be ashore in Freeport in the evening and I don't expect us to be on shore in Nassau (overnight port) but we might be... so yes, that would make for a cheaper call.

We are on the Freedom from Turkeys Group cruise and we use Verizon on our personal phones. This was helpful information. Thank you for posting. We will have to see if the service is actually working on the holiday as well as any other day.

Is this sort of info available for Cingular?

wow, well I'll have to hope I do have better luck than that. If not, we'll make it a quick 30 second call to his dad each night from the cabin phone.

I'm sure there is probably similar info on Cingular's website.
That info above was from the verizonwireless website.

Michellette:

Great tips and you have them right. I've been using Bell South and Verizon for many, many years.

Verizon is a bit unique because they use CDMA radio frequencies. The rest of the world uses GSM (some frequencies different than North America) so it can be a pain in the rear to connect in different countries.

The nice thing is that Verizon has done a "fairly" good job of establishing World Connections with many worldwide partners so CDMA connections are available in many countries.

I have been fortunate enough to have a world type phone for the last four years that has CDMA, multi-frequency GSM and PCS frequencies. However, I have been able to talk from China, Korea, England, most Caribbean Islands and Alaska and Hawaii on CDMA and not be charged the higher GSM or Roaming rates.

One other tip: Verizon is also trying to market their "Worldphone Blackberry" don't go for it. They have other CDMA/GSM phones that are less expensive. If you don't need a Blackberry don't buy it.

Take care,
Mike

I have just got my verizon bill this week and we used our cell phones on board - we were on the Celebration - and I didn't even think about it charging the roaming charges - anyway - thank goodness - that my phone & my son's chares were only $24.00 - that is ALOT - but I was imagining so much worse!

not bad, considering our Cingular charges were 78.00 --- we had to keep them on because of our business, but geesh.... I could have played more bingo

I received a letter of confirmation in the mail from Verizon, so hopefully it will work.

okay, what about this?
My sis and I have free mobile to mobile and free roaming... I was told it wouldn't cost anything to call each other regardless of where we are located. (on ship or in port).

We don't pay for minutes between us and have never been charged for roaming..... I'm going to call them again and double check to see if I get the same answer, but what do you all think?

One person said, I probably won't get any service on board anyway... I thought the ship had it's own tower or whatever....

Okay, so here is what I found out about verizon... the first guy I talked to didn't know what the heck he was talking about....

Okay, here's the scoop....
On the ship.... $2.49 per min
In Mexico.... $.99 per min.

If I call from mobile to mobile either on the ship or in Mexico, I will be charged for both phones....
If I call from one phone to the other phone located in Calif. I will not be charged minutes because we have mobile to mobile. I would only be charged .99 per min.

So I will leave my second phone at home with my nephew and take my primary with me... we will only call home while in Port to check on things...

Oh by the way for all you texters out there.... .50 to send text message... and only .05 to recieve.

We lock the cell phone in the safe also, but have a different vice...

I have to check my emails approx once a day bcuz of work anyway, so we tell family to email if there is an emergency. I don't sit there and read all of my emails, I just quickly check the subject lines.

Yeah, we are just telling my nephew to text us if something comes up, otherwise, I'm already with my sis/best friend... no need to talk to anyone else...
