we are going to Peurto rico, st thomas and BVI on the Miricle. Can you use a domestic cell phone on the ship . saw a post regarding international phone usage, but wasn't sure if it was needed in our hemisphere. when we were in bahamas a couple of years ago and out running a hurricane, we were able to use our cell phone from the ship to contact family back home. what are your thoughts?
I've never had a problem anywhere using my GSM phone while on a ship. I think the ship had a repeater on it and the price wasn't even that bad. However, my wife's CDMA phone did not work. (AT&T and T-Mobile in the US are GSM.. Everyone else is CDMA I believe)

If you have Cingular ( AT & T) you should be able to use your cell phone. Its called Cingular @ Sea.
I used mine in St. Thomas last year with no problems. The wife also used it to call home a couple of times @ sea.

we used our T-mobile while in port in San Juan and St. Thomas. came in as Suncoast but made the connections just fine. not sure about any additional charges as i've not seen the bill yet. either way, i'm sure it's cheaper than using the ships phone to call.

careful how much you use your phone because they do add a roaming charge (att) of around $2.39 per minute. We used it on our cruise in February and we're careful, but our neighbors ended up with an extra $100 bill talking/reaching their daughter while on the ship.

All of Carnival's 22 ships now have Cellular at Sea provided by SeaMobile Corporation's Wireless Maritime division. SeaMobile basically provides all the Internet and Cellular services for every major cruise line. Each cruise line has a different name for their service but SeaMobile and its divisions provide it. Can you say monopoly.
All GSM, CDMA and PCS phones will work onboard but you will be charged a roaming fee that is dependent on your cellular provider. Prices will be anywhere from around $3 to $5 per minute.
In port you will have to contact your provider to determine what coverage you have in the ports you will be visiting and if International Roaming charges apply.
Before leaving on the cruise make sure you have your cellular provider add International Roaming to your list of features. Without it your phone will not work outside the U.S. For Verizon users there is no charge for adding this feature.
