Default Man overboard....again.

Man Saved After Plunge From Cruise Ship
Monday, July 2, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By The Associated Press
MIAMI (AP) -- A Maryland man was rescued early Monday from the ocean off Florida after he reportedly jumped from a cruise ship, the Coast Guard said.

The Carnival Liberty alerted the Coast Guard around 11:35 p.m. Sunday that Scott Durrin, 29, of Rockville, Md., had possibly jumped overboard, according to the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard was told Durrin appeared to have been intoxicated, Petty Officer James Judge said.

Durrin fell about 36 feet into the water about 50 miles off the coast of Boca Raton. Crew aboard the Liberty threw life-rings and jackets over the side. Coast Guard crews located Durrin about an hour later.

Judge said Durrin was being examined early Monday but he did not know if the man had suffered any injuries. A spokesman for Miami-based Carnival did not immediately return a phone message early Monday.

Yup, just saw/heard about the one on the Liberty on the local news.... he was drunk... didn't waste any time did he????

It's getting ridiculous but I also heard that they might bring him up on charges, which I hope they do. This way future jumpers might think twice....

Default UPDATE...

Details released on cruise ship passenger who plunged into sea off Boca

By Andrew Tran
Sun-Sentinel.com
Posted July 2 2007, 9:45 AM EDT

DANIA BEACH -- Authorities say Scott Durrin is a lucky man.

He had been drinking with his three buddies on the Carnival Liberty since it left Fort Lauderdale about 4 p.m. Sunday, FBI officials said.

LocalLinks

"The group left the casino area after 11 p.m. to go outside, where Durrin climbed into a lifeboat, said FBI spokeswoman Judy Orihuela.

"He took the ax and started to chop at the ropes," she said.

The boat's assistant chief of security came out to get him to stop. He started climbing toward the 29-year-old Rockville , Md., man and told him to get down.

"Then he jumped into the water," Orihuela said.

Durrin plunged almost 36 feet into the water about 50 miles off Boca Raton at about 11: 35 p.m. He was rescued less than an hour later by a Coast Guard cutter that happened to be nearby.

The crew of the cruise ship threw life rings and rafts over the side, which helped the Coast Guard locate the area where Durrin fell, said Petty Officer 1st Class Dana Warr.

Two Coast Guard cutters started searching and a helicopter was launched from Miami. The 87-foot cutter Bluefin, which was about nine miles from the Carnival when the call came in, found Durrin at 12:22 a.m. Monday, Warr said.

"Everything about a search is timely information," Warr said. "It's when you don't get information for eight to nine hours that it becomes a guessing game for us."

After initial interviews at the Coast Guard administration building in Dania Beach, Durrin was taken to a local hospital. Warr did not know which one.

Warr said Durrin "appeared to be quite intoxicated" and smelled of alcohol when the Bluefin crew rescued him, but they did not test him for alcohol.

Warr said the Coast Guard did not plan to charge Durrin for the cost of the rescue. In most instances, the agency doesn't charge people they rescue unless they're called out on a hoax, an official said.

The FBI, which interviewed cruise ship officials, is investigating. The ship continued on to its destination.

It was the second time somebody fell overboard off a cruise ship in area waters in four months.

Michael Mankamyer, 35, of Orlando, survived a 60-foot plunge from the Carnival Glory off Fort Lauderdale in March.

He floated for eight hours in the Atlantic Ocean after witnesses said he lunged off the balcony of his cabin. "

Personally, I think he should be charged!!!

If the details of the above post are accurate, that man has endangered other passengers by damaging the lines holding the life raft to the side of the ship.

Seems very clear to me there was intent to do harm here.

too bad so many people "need" to have alcohol. This is one of the many stupid things people do when they drink. I agree, people should have to pay the cost of rescue attempts and also pay something ($100 each person) to all the other passengers whose cruise was delayed for hours because of their stupidity.

we need to outlaw alcohol... it's one of the most dangerous drugs, especially because it's legal!

Kimminy crickets people, waht is wrong with those idiots!!

Jump off the ship on the LAST day of the cruise! Cruising is expensive, unless you live in the home port and take the cheapest inside cabin, so why jump off the ship a 8-24 hours after leaving port...do it 12 hours before arriving back....

This is getting ridiculous people jumping off the ships. I agree that the drunken idiot should be brought up on charges because he did endanger his life and the life of others trying to get him to back to reality. As for the 18 year old, no one will know what went on because he is dead, but was he suffering from depression and suicidal tendencies that his parents didn't notice, or did he just want to see what it would be like to jump off the ship?

I don't know about you, but I can safely say that I will NOT be jumping off my Deck 10 balcony in September and I will not let anyone else back in my cabin to attempt to throw me off--doubt they could anyhow I'd kick their arse!

I drink plenty of alcohol and never have had the inclination to jump overboard. You don't have to drink yourself if you don't want, but I like to drink and will keep drinking. Banning or outlawing alcohol is not the answer. Remember "Prohibition"?

If you would like to know the story of the 18 year old then you can go to the Houston Chronicle website at www.chron.com. His story has been all over the news for awhile, which probably has a lot to do with why he may have wanted to kill himself. People have no privacy anymore because of the media. Don't misunderstand, I am not knocking the media because most of the time they tell us important events that we all need to know about - but if it had been me that went through what that young man went through, then I am not sure that I would have wanted it broadcast to the entire country.

My heart just breaks for the 18 year olds family. They have been through so much & now this. I hate that he did this but I can see why he would have been so depressed that he would do something like this. I hope his family can move on peacefully.

Well said Dave.

People do plenty of stupid things when driving and that's legal too. Should we ban automobiles as well?

As an alcohol drinker , who has manged to live well into my 4th decade, raise 2 children and generally has been a contributor to society ....well at least less of a drain..... I bristle when I hear people say we should ban alcohol based on the actions of irresponsible or outright stupid people.

As Dave pointed out .... the U.S.A.s experimentation with outlawing alcohol was less than successful.

Hey Greg, we are almost neighbors. Well put also. I am also into my 4th decade and raising two children responsibly. Drink responsibly is the key. I really like the new Cap Morgan commercial where the guys order a pizza for delivery while at the place and then get in the car with the pizza delivery guy. I have been dying to try that!! 8)

I LOVE that commercial !

And I agree about drinking responsibly as being key. Sounds like this guy wouldn't have made it through the next day of his cruise even if he stayed on board ! He would have been sleeping it off in the lifeboat !

The trick is to "attain and then maintain"

Has anyone else noticed, (or is it just me), that the media says just about everytime, that people "fall" overboard? What a subtle way to indicate that cruise ships are dangerous places to avoid. On every cruise I've been, have never seen a place to FALL overboard. It takes a concerted effort to find yourself in the water. But,,,,,,we live in a society today that has to blame someone else when stupid decisions are made.

Interestingly enough, these were not the only two. Someone went overboard from the Valor on June 23rd. That is three in a week from Carnival. They are well in the lead for most "Man Overboard"

See here....

The newest trend I guess. I hope they charge the guy! The one that was drunk I mean. I agree dave ---- wait until the end when you get your bill!! The tragic story of the suicide still eats at my stomach. That poor guy. I don't know if I would have handled it differently - its so easy to kill yourself on the ship if you think about it. Sad Sad Sad...is there a solution tho?
