Default how safe is San Juan in the evening?

I am looking at eastern caribbean cruises and most of them seem to include a stop in the evening in San Juan. Does anyone know about crime involving tourists there? I'd like to do an Eastern caribbean when my son graduates high school in 4 years but would like to avoid Puerto Rico if possible. I know we can just stay on the ship that night, too. If anyone has done this itinerary, please give me your comments on safety in San Juan in the evenings.

Thanks!

They say it is not too safe after dark. This is my own personal experience. Take from it what you will.

I cruzed solo in May on the Liberty. The ship got to SJ at 5:00. I got off the ship at around 5:30, when to the package store, purchased some liquor, drank loads of free samples at the package store, returned it to my cabin and left the ship again - alone (now I am a bit tipsy). I walked around what I guess was Old San Juan, a few blocks from the ship - alone. Brought a few souvenirs (keychains/magnets). As the sun started to go down, I returned to the main strip that runs in front of the terminal (there were two ships in that night, the CCL Liberty and the RCL Liberty of the Seas.). On that main street, there are plenty of people. I wandered down an alley to Senor Frog which was across the street from a casino. I spent the evening going back and forth between Senor Frog (which is wild) and the casino. I had two yard long Pina Colada. Add that to the free samples from the liquor store and I was pretty much wasted. Able to walk upright though. When I was ready, I walked back to the ship along the main strip which was crowded and returned to the ship at around 10:45 - alone.

No one bothered me.

We have stopped in San Juan on many cruises which arrive around 5:00 p.m. We have never booked a shore excursion because we have also been on cruises that docked early in the morning and have seen quite a bit of San Juan during the day. As far as your concerns about safety in the evening, we have never experienced a problem. I just cruised with my 16 year old grandson last month and we got off the ship, walked around the waterfront area and over to Senor Frogs which was a lot of fun. There are lots of people walking around from the cruise ships, we felt totally safe. It's unfortunate that the cruise ships don't dock until 5:00 p.m. because San Juan is lovely.

So I am guessing that the strip by the terminal stays pretty full of people from the time the ship docks till into the evening? Is this because the stores in the strip stay open late?

I have 2 places that I want to go. I want to see condom world and the big frog out front with the condom on its head Also I want to get some rum to bring home for gifts. Will I be able to stay near the ship for these things? Thanks a ton! Carla

On the second floor of the terminal where Carnival docks their ships is a large duty free liquor store. Very nice selection of many of the popular liquors. I went there first, made my purchases and then took them back to my cabin (the ship did not attempt to confiscate them). I then left the ship again to explore.

I have no idea what Condom World is. Never heard of it.

However, the stores do not stay open late as far as I know. I am not one to shop on vacation. I buy a key chain and a magnet and I am pretty much done. Maybe a coffee mug if I see a pretty one. But that is about it. However, I believe I heard that the stores close at around 8 p.m. or so.

Good luck finding Condom World. It may be nearby but I didn't see or notice it.

thanks everyone, I think I'll skip the frog with a condom on his head

This might just be the itinerary for me for our next cruise.

I'll have to see what itineraries there are in 3 years, when I will probably book it.

It would be great to be able to cruise in 2 years, so I'll have to see how things hold out for me financially (i.e. the tiny co. I work for can stay in business!!!))

Thanks for the info IBCruisin

I am really interested in bringing back rum as a gift. Do they only sell name brands like Bacardi and Capitan Morgans or do they sell all the different kinds of rum made on the island? Thanks, Carla

We have also cruised to San Juan on several occasions and have flown in several times to cruise from there. I would use common sense just as you would in any city. We have stayed there for up to four days after a cruise. We would walk from our hotel to restaurants, the beach,
the casinos, etc. in the evenings. We found there were many families out in the evenings at the beach park near our hotel. We normally tried to get
back to our hotel by 10:30 or so. There were always lots of people out walking. We had no problems and thoroughly enjoyed our evenings there.

They sell all kinds of rum and other liquors in this shop. Very extensive selection. Several brands/flavors that I have not seen in stateside liquor stores (even though I don't frequent that many liquor stores in my real life. . burp!! 'xcuse me . . burp!! )

Anyway, I purchased a delicious Passion Fruit liquor from there that is not available anywhere in NY state. Also every kind and flavor of rum imaginable.

I don't imagine you will have too much trouble finding the spirit of your choice. If you can't find it at that store in SJ, wait until you get to St. Thomas. Go to their shopping district and there are several large duty free shops there also. Prices are comparable with SJ so either location will be a winner.

Happy cruzin'

Old San Juan by night is fine...There are police officers patroling all over. I've been there about 50 times and have never had an issue. I even proposed to my wife in Old San Juan. Have no fear, like any other place stick to the main streets and you will be fine. There is alot to see in the close vicinity of the ship. Enjoy!

OK - to all of you that have been to SJ before. Can anyone tell me about the Coach store that is near the port? My daughter and I would love to stop and purchase - however only if the deal is a good one.

And what is this Condom World? May have to google that one

Also, be careful on the rum purchases. We stopped in St. Marteen a couple years ago and husband purchased "St. Marteen Rum". Once at home, I was reading the bottle only to discover the rum was made in Kentucky. So much for "St. Marteen Rum"

Safe sailing.

San Juan is actually quite charming and there are lots of sights to see. The tourist areas are also very safe. They have a massive amount of police there since tourism is such an important industry to them. I have been there multiple times and will be heading back next month (not for a cruise but a hotel stay). Don’t be afraid to head out and see some neat things. If you are really worried do an organized shore excursion, those are very safe

We would love to know too!

My BF's mother was in San Juan once before but they were only off the boat for a short time as it was during a riot. They were actually on a bus when they went past condom world, saw the start of the rioting and demanded the driver take them back. What caught her eye was the huge statue of a frog with a condom on its head outside of condom world Since then we have all decided that we have to go back and see it.

We have been to San Juan once just this past year. We toured Old San Juan and I remember noting to my wife what a large number of police were walking the streets and standing at the intersections. It occured to me that perhaps there had been some sort of incident that had prompted this in the past or maybe a terrorist threat? The police were so numerous it actually made me feel uneasy, and to this day I honestly can't understand why it should have. Needless to say we toured the old city, walked up and down its streets for several hours and returned to our ship. The only incident of note were the sunburns we managed to aquire.

So go and injoy. My wife and I will be returning there this coming January for our next cruise.

As for your favorite beverages, the duty free shop at the peir is excellent. We recommend Tortuga Rum. You can also purchase Bacardi Reserva, which is not available in the US.

I've been there once after 5pm. We shopped until about 7pm, never once felt unsafe. The stores were still open but the girls were tired and we just wanted to see the fort and go back to the ship.

We found a taxi on one of the street corners and asked about going to the fort and back to the ship. He told us that the fort was closed but for $20 he would give the 6 of us a city tour and take us to the ship.

Best shore excursion we ever had. He took us to the fort, stopped, got out took pictures, he explained everything we saw. Drove us around for another hour showing us the sights, and even the not touristy parts. We ended up giving him is $20 and about another $30 in tips.

Still way better than the $20 per person the busses and taxis want at the pier. Only problem is we have never been able to recreate that good of an impromptu tour at any other port. Taxis and tours seem to have a set price or all be owned by the same company elsewhere.

My wife and I and my 2 children returned from an Eastern cruise in April of this yr. We loved San Juan, we di not book an excursion with the cruiseline. We thought we might just walk and do a little shopping. We were approached by a guide and we made a really good deal for him to take us over the island. I'm glad we did because the main shopping area is a little ways from the pier. We have never done anything like this before we usually book with the cruiseline so we didn't know what to expect. He was very informative and it was very personal as it was just the 4 of us. So to answer your question, Stay as a group and everything will be fine, Have fun and enjoy San Juan.

David
By the way my children were 16 and 20 yrs old
