Default Carnival is at it again. Check your credit card.

On a recent Carnival cruise, being an experienced cruiser, I kept an eye on my statement throughout the cruise so there would be no problem on the last day. When we got our statement, it matched our expenses, so I thought "no problem." WRONG. When I received my credit card bill, Carnival charged me more than the amount on my statement. I called the customer relations office and was told that we consumed those warm in room sodas and water on the last night after midnight when the statements are printed. This is completely false. The person on the phone assured me the line would review my case and I would have an answer in about 3 days. A week later I called again and this time was told "never in 3 days, but for sure within 2 weeks." After 2 weeks, the latest rep said "there is no time frame. Whenever Carnival gets to it." The only person who could say we consumed the bogus liquids is the room steward. My guess is he was upset because we did not leave him an extra tip on top of the gratuities already charged to us by Carnival. Is it any wonder so many people are dissatisfied with Carnival?

So sorry to hear about your problem. We have cruised with Carnival 9 times and have never had this happen. We do keep all of our signed receipts while on board and check our charges out every day or so, though. Most of the ships have the ability to check your portfolio on the TV screen so you won't get any big surprises at the end of the cruise.

I take one of the carnival that we find in the room and put it in the vanity drawer or the safe. At the end of each day, I take all my receipts and put them in the envelope and list them on the outside. When I check my portfolio, I just check them off. If I find a discrepancy, I report it right then.

I know that you said, you keep a check on these things as well, but just thought I would mention this for new cruisers.

Simply follow a procedure anyone with a credit card dispute might and have the credit card company dispute the charge or request a charge back.

I agree with Phil and Liz. get your credit card company involved. They have many more tools to work with than the average person.

Good Luck!!

I'm not planning to have any of the items in my cabin frig (if I even HAVE a cabin frig in next week's Sensation cabin type 6b) so I will have the steward remove everything, so I can't possi bly be charges for eating or drinking anything in there.

One thing to do - most ships have the technology to allow you to check your account throughout the cruise via closed circuit TV. Do so frequently so you can make adjustments to any discrepancy asap.

I drank a soda out of my frig on the Liberty back in early June and was never charged. Maybe they charged you for my soda??????

Credit card dispute and let the bank fight your battles.

Thanks to all who answered me. As stated in my original message, I did keep an eye on the account via the room TV and the statement given to me on the last day was correct. But the charge against my credit card was more than the statement charge. The amount is not much, but of course it's the principal of the thing. I also will ask that all drinks be removed from my room on the first day of our next cruise. While at it, keep an eye on fancy towels and/or robes. Have the steward remove them on the last evening while you watch.

Never had a problem with CCL. What our statement said is what is was. We always check it the last morn of cruise. You could have this problem on any cruise line. I don't think its the end of the world if you would have a problem , you can get it fixed, maybe it takes time.

Default Additional stateroom charges...

Just got back from the Conquest yesterday. I had a very similar situation. I checked my Folio acct. on the TV in my room daily starting at about day four. I'm a drinker and picky one at that. I would only drink Bacardi rum and Diet Coke in the mini bar. I would have anywhere from one to three of the drinks per day. However, I started to notice that I was being charged different amounts for my "In Cabin Bev" lines. One line on one particular day was $40.00. I complained to the perser's desk and demanded that Carnival deliver a detailed report of all charges from my mini bar. The perser said they would have it delivered to my room. I never received it. I asked again and never received it. Consequently, I'm still up in the air on these charges. However, the amount pending on my credit card is about half of what my sail and sign account balance was. I'm wondering if they just waived the In Cabin Bev. charges. It was because of that situation that I did not tip my sturart any extra. That makes me a little sad because he did a great job. I just don't like being ripped off. Hopefully the charges will be reversed and all will be settled. If not, then I disput the charges on my credit card.

The good news is that we had a blast. We had one situation with the Spa and one with the bar. Other than that, it was darn near perfect.

Good luck with your charges.

James

The last day when we received our bill on the Inspiration we noticed that there were extra charges that said we had consumed all the large bottles of water. In fact it said we opened not drank the water. They said we broke the seals. I had brought my own water and soda and neither did my fiance' or myself ever open the bottles. We made a stink about it due the principle of the thing and they finally took off those charges. My fiance' was so sure it was the room stewart that had opened the bottles he went pass him and said you knew we never opened anything in that room that we didn't bring so you lost your extra tip for being dishonest. As we walked down the hall others were saying the same thing and we all had the same room steward.

*shiver* Sounds like this has been happening a lot.

I would like to ask to have that stuff removed from my room before I even get there. Can I do this at the pursers desk so that its noted on my account? I hate to tell the cabin steward and then have him "forget" he removed them and get charged.

[/quote] Yes it does...OR IT MIGHT BE JUST A BOGUS POST from a former employee or an employee(acting on his own behalf) of another cruise line. Anybody can post anything on a forum, and judging from the thread starters post count, he's not a regular around here.

The OP is a regular and, it seems to me anyway, highly regarded on another site(s) and I am inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt.

We have seen recently how judging too soon can lead to major issues on this board.

If this were happening on one particular ship I would have to say yes, there must be a concerted effort by someone to pad bills. Since it does not appear to be isolated to one ship, I do have to wonder where the motivation for adding charges is coming from.

Default The motivation....

The motivation comes from the tip (15% gratuity for each beverage restocked by the stuard in the mini bar). It doesn't seem like much at one time. However, if you add up that 15% gratuity from all the of stuard's cabins, it ends up being a very nice tip.

I apologize for the poor grammer in my prior post. I don't have time to proof read or spell check when posting at work.

ON THE FLIP SIDE! I LOVED my cruise and plan on posting a review very soon.

I also want to thank all of you here at Cruise Mates for your great tips and helpful advice. It made my vacation all that it could be.

Sincerely,

James

Yes the obvious motivation would be the %.

My thought was are the stewards somehow communicating amongst themselves fleetwide.

It seems there would be no motivation for the officer in charge of staff, either, to have a meeting with their stewards and explain how wrong it is to be dishonest about the consumption of in cabin beverages.

Default No consiracy...

I see. You are thinking that there is no way that Carnival would allow this to take place within the organization. I totally agree and I'm shure that rules have been put into place in order to avoid it. However, money is a huge motivator for these stuards. They don't do it to everyone because they don't want to get caught. They do it to cruisers that they think will let a few bucks slide and that use the mini bar. I just happen to fit that profile.

The stuards know what type of customer they are serving withinn the first 24 hours. If they think that they can slide a few tips from the minibar, they will. If they get caught... "oh! I'm sooo sorry. It was a mistake". Then maybe a verbal repremand. All of the room stuards know how to do it and they all talk about doing it amongst themselves. Not all of them do it but, they all know that they can.

Hey, I'm not trying to be negative. I just know how it works. Unfortunately, my stuard made a mistake. The small differences in my "In Cabin Bev" account that HE was responsible for cost him a $100 tip.

My advise... Keep your eye on your "Folio" account in your cabin if you are using the minibar. If you find a descrepancy, address it as soon as possible.

Respectfully,

James
