Default Freeport - Lucaya Marketplace question:

In Freeport we are going on the glass bottom boat in the morning and backto the ship for lunch. I thought that after lunch, rather than stay on the ship for the afternoon. we would take a taxi/van to port lacaya marketplace.

Is it easy to find a taxi/van to get back to the ship? Is there a specific place where they have taxi'vans lined up waiting for passengers?

I'm just horrified that we might not make it back and get left behind as it's not a Carnival excursion.

Thanks!

I wouldn't worry about getting back. I must have been asked 20 times if I needed a cab. They wait at both ends of the market.

They did make us wait while they looked around for others to fill it up.

You won't have a problem. It was very easy. If you want to see a nice beach, walk accross the street to the Sheraton / Westin. They are near the casino.

The swimming was bad becase it had seaweed, but it was a beautiful spot.

I would recommend you do this.

Brian,

Thanks! I don't think we want to go swimming, but we will want to look for seashells and wander up and down the beach a bit, get some photos!

If I find a cab/bus at 4:00 will I get back in time for the sailing?

Michelle

Very good photo location.

The ship leaves at 5:00. It is a 15 min drive. You would have plenty of time if there are no issues. I am a little bit chicken, so I would leave at 3:45 if it were me. You never know about that flat tire.

Unless it's changed since I did Freeport, you'll be at Port Lucaya for the glass bottomed boat ride, that's were it docks. You can certainly return to the ship for lunch, but you'll have an oppurtunity to look around while you're there and locate transportation, and get an idea of travel time back to the ship.

If your glass bottom boat does depart from Our Lucaya, you would be better off just staying there and having lunch at the Marketplace. (there is a Subway right in the very front center, where you could get a simple grilled chicken sandwich, if you don't want to try some local cuisine)

The cab ride to and from the ship is longer than 15 minutes. (closer to 20-30 minutes. I think it took 10-15 minutes just to get clear of the industrail area. Then Freeport, then Our Lucaya.)

Also remember that you are expected back on the Sensation earlier than the departure time. (I know in Nassau they pull out at 7AM, but there was a sign as you left the ship to be back on board by no later than 5:30AM. I didn't pay attention in Freeport, as I knew we would be back early because it was the formal night)

It is extremely easy to catch a cab back from either end of the marketplace, just past the two straw markets.
But like somebody said, they won't leave until they fill the van. (and after our driver told us what gas cost him in Freeport, I truly cannot blame them)
So I wouldn't wait until everybody else has already returned to the ship, to try and leave.

Bill

Bill - I'm on the glass bottom boat ride, which doesn't mention a stop at the marketplace. There is another boat ride, not sure if it's also glass bottom, that does go to the market place, according to the excursion desciprion. That's NOT the one we're on. So I thought we'd cab/van it and hope we don't get stranded -that's why I'm taking several credit cards - I hope I don't have to pay for us to be flown in a tiny plane from freeport to nassau!

I guess if I find some others who are also going to take the van back to the ship we can hang out near or with them and make sure we all leave together in plenty of time.

If it's that much of a drive, I don't think I'll want to even bother - just to hang out for 60 or 90 minutes. knowing me,k I'll be too stressed out about getting back on time so we'll probably end up staying on the ship for the afternoon. I know I'll appreciate the lack of crowds, maybe will relax in the jacuzzi while Ian plays video games for a bit then we'll do mini golf!

I think Bill is right. You will get off the boat for your tour and find a guy with a sign. I am not 100% sure, but I think they take you by van to Port Lucay for the Glass bottom boat ride. Instead of hoping on the van ride back you could tell them that you are going to get your own cab back. That is what I did.

I don't think you should worry. You should walk around the area. Just give yourself time to get back.

Thanks Bill and Brian - If my glass bottom boat tour DOES start and finish at Port Lucaya Market place, that will make it easier for me and we would definitely just have lunch there then check out the shopping and beach! My son the picky eater LOVES Subway.

There's a pretty little square at Port Lucaya behind the straw markets that is called Count Basie Square. I forget if he lived there, or just played there, but it's pretty and there are a couple of little restaurants there to try.

We took the cab to Port Lucaya (and I'm pretty sure no boats leave from the pier -it will most likely be Port Lucaya), walked around the straw markets, (small and MUCH better than the big one in Nassau) went to the beach for a little while, ate and went back to the ship.

Freeport, without an excursion, is a stop I'm not crazy about. Last time I was there we stayed on the ship, but I ALWAYS get off when I visit a new port.

I've learned that what some people hate, I love, so I don't take any chances - I have to see for myself.

If I remember, there were a few other "American" restaurants and fast foods in there. (I was busy checking out the greek, italian and other restaurants.)

Hope whatever you guys wind up doing, that you have a great time.
(we stayed on the ship our first trip and enjoyed the smaller crowds also.)

I don't remember Subway (Not saying it wasn't there), but I remember a Domenios Pizza.
