Default casino....

I don't normally gamble, but when I cruise solo I do plan to give it a try. I know how to play blackjack, but where can you learn about playing craps? I know each player takes their turn rolling the dice, and you aim for either a 7 or 11, but othe than that I'm clueless! I also have a basic understanding of poker but could use a refresher.

Do the cruiselines give a class on this stuff? I guess the casino workers can explain things to me as well? Or are they too busy to do this? I recall seeing something on the tv on Sensation explaning gambling but something in person would help me more, I think.

I will only set aside a casino budget $100 for the whole trip. Once that's gone, that's it.

Are there any good websites that I can go to to learn these gambling basics?

Thanks!

The cruise line does have classes. Watch for them in the ship's newspaper.

great, thanks Luanne! I didn't notice them probably because I wasn't interested in it on that cruise. I'll have to dig out my Capers, which I kept, they are in a pile with my cruise docs.

Your welcome Michelle. How is your son doing? Is he ready to go back to school?

Stay OFF the crap tables! No place for a novice to learn the game. Slots, roulette (you can bet odd/even or black/red), or blackjack much better choices. There used to a game bundled with MS Windows called Dr. Blackjack. I'd play a couple hours a nite before goin to Vegas and I'd eat their lunches. That's why you won't find it bundled with your OS anymore, but I'm sure there's other freeware/shareware options available online to teach you the finer points of the game. IMO, the odds on the ships machines are very poor, but it's fun to spend a little time in the casino.

Yes, I meant craps rather than slots. and I will probably stay more with the slots and blackjack.

My son started high schol today
I will hopefully get a good report from his when he gets home!

I know he's not happy summer's over but he WAS looking forward to seeing his buddies that he didn't get to see over the summer, and to telling people all about our cruise!

as a novice, try to play the table games at non peak times and you will get plenty of instruction from the dealers; however, you will be playing with real money... however, usually in the am, shortly after the tables in the casino open (around 9 - 10 am) is when they have instructions; look for it in the capers, as this is the only time where you can learn without putting your money down and the lessons vary from day to day

craps: stay away until you are a seasoned player; look for online lessons, etc; plenty of info on the web; $100.00 will not go far on craps until you have a good idea of how to play: also during hte day the limit is $5.00 per bet but towards late afternoon/early evening the limit goes up to $10.00 per bet

at the casino - look very carefully at the tables before you sit down; i.e. they have fun 21, which eliminates all the queens from the deck; they have single deck black jack with a higher limit, the table limits for blackjack range from $5.00 and up; however, generally you will find more tables in the $10 to $25 range; etc...

another game that you may want to look into is Carribbean Poker; I haven't played it in a casino yet, but some people feel that you have better chances at this game

they also have 3 card poker

I suggest you stay away from the slots if you want to enjoy your $100 for more then a short while in the casino. I have never seen anyone successful on a slot machine on a cruise, but have heard of people hitting smaller jackpots compared to Vegas' size ones. Stick to the table games if you want to have more control on your odds of winning.

Hi Michelle,

Check your Capers for those table gaming classes, they usually hold them around 10:30am also they show those lessons on one of Cabin's T.V. channels all day long.

I've found that the slots can tend to be more loose at the begining. Then tighten up from the middle to the end. I also set a budget and when it's gone it's gone. Part of my entertainment budget. Have fun.

i agree with Will i personally like the roulette tablet cause there is a bunch of different ways to bet with a variety of odds. red/black, odd/even these have 2-1 odds. you can also play directly on a number for the highest pay off 35-1 odds. i tend to like to play either on the corner of 4 numbers which means you have four chances to win with lower pay off or you can place your bet on the line in between 2 numbers so you have 2 chances but the odds are i think 16-1 or something like that. anyway i tend to place a bet directly on 1 number then place a bet or 2 on either 4 corners or on the line between 2 numbers each round. i dont tend to play the red/black or odd/even since the pay off is so low. good luck!!

Best bet in the casino for the player is come/don't come line with double odds back up on the crap table. The casino only has a 1.41% advantage. Unless you can count cards on the black jack table this crap bet is best.

All the other bets on the crap table are sucker bets, stay away from them.

You can pick up a casino CD at Wal Mart for about $10 and play all the casino games with instructions on each.

Regards,
Thomas

No, its more like you ask for the Casino Pit boss and when you find him/her just hand over your wallet and walk away

I forgot about roulette, I may play a couple of spins on that as well.
I really want to keep it simple.

So perhaps a couple of spins of roulette, a few slot machines, and a few hands of black jack. I probaly won't spend more than an hour in the casino.

Thanks Martha, you are obviously a master of BJ. I will not play in a casino with those machines. But that's just me. So I will enjoy all the other wonderful activities on the ship. The only cruise line worthwhile playing BJ is NCL where the dealer uses a "shoe" and their BJ rules aren't half bad.

Good luck to all......Jim.

The best blackjack table I found was fun 21

I did not know how to play craps until this cruise but I went to the table when it was not so busy and asked the dealer how to play. He gave me instruction and advice and I was able to learn the game in short fashion. The dealers on any of the 5 cruise ships I have been on have always been friendly and informative when asked any questions. They will give sound advice on chances and advisories on hits in blackjack in regards to odds and chances when asked. I love the casino on ships and this tends to be the majority of our entertainment while on the ship. I never gamble with more than $100.00 per 7 day cruise and stop when I loose this amount. More often then not, I am able to use this amount of money to play in the casino the entier week and then really splurge on the last evening of the cruise.

Default 3 card poker

Three Card Poker game is so easy to learn. 3 cards, make your best hand. The dealer must have a queen ot better to even open, dealer don't open, you don't lose. If you have a pair or better you win. If dealer has a queen and you have a king you win. But watch out it can become addictive.
