Like ive said i'm whiter than white. Sometimes i burn easily sometimes not so much. If you had no pigment cept freckles, would you just always keep a shirt on even while snorkling? I'm sure being in the actual water will make me burn. I have lots of sunscreen but you know if you swim for a while and use a towel your fair game soon after.
I dont want to ruin my week with a painful burn. I thought about tanning for the n ext week but it just seems hopeless at this point.
Do whatever it takes to protect yourself from the sun! If you need to wear a shirt in the water -- do it! However, most companies ask that you wear a life jacket while snorkeling, so that will give you some coverage. Just remember, the people you are worrying about impressing while snorkeling, won't be there when you're nursing a sunburn! 8)

Where are you going? If it's the Caribbean then yes, I would suggest wearing a tee-shirt while snorkeling. What really gets burned are your shoulders because that's what is most exposed to the intense Caribbean sun. You burn much more easily in the Caribbean.
How do I know? From experience. I blistered my shoulders in Cancun. Of course that was 23 years ago...but I still remember!
Sometimes on snorkeling excursions they make you wear a lifevest (you inflate it only if you're in trouble). In that case your shoulders are covered so you're okay but if you really burn easily, why take a chance and ruin your vacation.
And by the way, it's actually a very good question!

There is a great waterproof 40spf sunscreen out there by Coppertone. My DH uses it and plans on it in November when we go. He is extremely fair skinned and burns just thinking about going in the sun.
Also we are getting him a rash gaurd and I would suggest you get that also. You can wear it over your suit and then just put suncreen on your arms. They do make rash guards in long sleeve also though.
Just google Rash Guards and you will get a ton of sites that come up. They range anywhere in the $20-$40 range. Definitely worth the money.
Even with a tan you are still susceptible to sun burn-tan does not help with burning (done extensive research on sun/sun damage for a project in nursing school) contrary to popular belief...
Wal-Mart carries a brand of sunscreen, called Ocean Potion, that is FABULOUS. I won't use anything else, and it's the only kind I can use on my face that doesn't make it feel like it's on fire... I love whoever made it! They make a sport version too. And it's a big bottle for like $4.50.

Nurseybabe, worry not... go to eBay.put "rashguard"into the search button. these garments are made out of material that blocks out alot of the sun. They are used by surfers, snorkelers andand scuba dicers to protect your skin from UV and other things that can ruin a vacation. they are lightweight and I highly recommend them

Although it looks like you already loaded up on sunblock, another good one recommended to me by my dermatologist, is Neutrogena Ultra Sheer SPF 45. It's the new mist type - non-greasy, waterproof, sprays on evenly and has little to no scent.
All the other brands tend to burn my face and eyes but not this one. It is a little more, like $10 for a 5oz can, but worth it IMO.

You definitely need to wear a T-shirt when snorkeling if you burn easily. Many snorkelers and SCUBA divers wear T-Shirts. But, you also need to apply a high number sun block before you put the T-Shirt on. We have seen people on cruises that actually had the logo (on the back of the T-Shirt they were wearing while snorkeling) sunburned onto their back. Not only that, they were in a world of hurt! Don't forget the aloe vera gel or something that will relieve sunburn just in case.

Loose-fitting long-sleeved shirts and long pants made from tightly woven fabric offer the best protection. A wet T-shirt offers you much less UV protection than does a dry one, but if you're in the water a T-shirt will help. Just be sure to use sunblock with high SPF, too.

I have the same skin type you described and am notorious for quick sunburns that used to ruin my vacations by the second day. I have found that, like Donna, a few visits to the tanning bed makes a big difference. I start 30 days out at 5 minutes but I go twice per week to build up enough tan. First 3 trips 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and 15 minutes respectively. Then the rest are at the prescribed limit for the type of tanning bed being used.
It works, I have never had a significant burn on vacations where I prepared with the tanning bed. Also, I can reduce the number of occasions where I need sunscreen. I really don’t like wearing the stuff.
Still I will frequently wear a T-shirt while in the sun or snorkeling. Don’t want to tempt the fates too much.

I volunteer for the Road To Recovery program, I drive patients for the cancer treatments, pick them up from their home and then take them back home after their treatment.

I should head your warning well actually. My Dad died when I was 3, he was only 36, from melanoma...he was bald and had it on his head guess they had no idea about the sun back then...
Nurseypoo, I feel your pain. I had melanoma in '81. It was on my right calf and the doctors had said that I would probably have to lose my leg. I was so pleased that I was able to retain it. I am fair skinned and had red hair as a child so I am very prone to sunburn.
The Hard Rock shirt mishap occurred in '88. I was not prepared for that. I thougth I had stayed under the palm frocks enough but...

Use SPF 40+ and reapply often. Shirt = minimal protection. A Dive Skin is better. JFYR, I use a 1 mil full wetsuit and hood as my permanent "sunscreen" and can be out all day if I keep my face covered in SPF 40+.
