mayan ruins tour in Cozumel

had anyone taken this excursion? after the tour of the ruins, do they take you back by the same a/c bus to get the ferry? the description on carnival.com doesn't say that.

I'm considering this excursion for my June cruise
Is the beach next to it nice?
Is it worth the whole 7 hours of the excursion?

I love to explore!

The ferry ride is about 30 minutes then 45 minutes or so on the bus to the ruins. 2 1/2 hours travel time.

We visited the ruins while porting in Calica. The ruins are nice, very interesting and the beach is beautiful, however it was very rough surf when we were there last year. So if you are looking for a relaxing beach this is not the excursion for you!

We loved Tulum. People keep telling us the pictures look like something from a magazine. Its worth the time to get there. Carla ;)

Thanks, I wasn't thinking about relaxing on the beach, but I would probably go down there for 30 minutes or so just to walk and look for sea shells, enjoy the sound of the waves.... just being near the water is relaxing for me.

and again, I assume the bus took you back to the ferry?

Tulum is a FABULOUS tour, but you'll see little else of Cozumel if you go. Besides the ferry to/from the mainland, the bus trip is considerably longer than 45 minutes, in fact, it takes that long to get to the jewelry factory/rest stop and at least that again to get to Tulum. We did Tulum our first trip to Coz and booked another trip cuz we never saw Coz. Also, Playa del Carmen, where the ferry lands, has a GORGEOUS beach. Here's a couple pics of the ruins and the beach below.

PS - Tulum has the BIGGEST/MOST iguanas on the planet.

CR: That' si waht I was afraid of, initlly with it being a 7 hour outing. I thought I might also consider the Cozumel Highlights & Shopping excursion or the Playa Mia Beach Break Deluxe excursion.

If I just wanted to walk around by the pier with a map, what sort of attractions are within a mile of the ship pier?

I dont' want to do scuba or anything requiring me to leave my valuables in a locker.

Well there's Carlos-n-Charlie's, I've never it made it past there.
Just kidding, there's a TON of little shops/restaurants/bars right along the ocean at the pier. You can wonder a few blocks inland, but I'd be careful after that. Also, Chankanaab Park is very nice and it's about a 10 minute cab ride. The fares are posted by the taxis, I think Chankanaab is $14pp now. I'd normally say no need for ANY excursion in Cozumel, but bein a young woman traveling alone, different rules apply and I'm sure you know how to watch out for yourself.

Sorry in my post I said 45 minutes but we were driving a rental car so we probally were going much faster than a tour bus, anyhow it's a good haul!

If you are athletic we did an Eco tour on our last trip to Cozumel in June. IIt does involve ferrying over to Chick Ha on the Yucatan but still leaves some time to enjoy the island later in the day. We jungle trekked on bikes, zip lined, snorkled and tubed in natural cenotes, enjoyed a Mayan lunch and purification ceremony in the village and were back in Cozumel by 2:30 in the afternoon. Plenty of time for us to hit a small place for a Margarita and persue the shops and purchase a sink! To this date is one of our most memorable excursions and we've cruised quite a bit.

Whatever you do have fun.

I'm a big history buff, so we went on this excursion.. But it was so bloody hot.. And you can't touch any of the buildings or go inside of them. (with good reason of course, the amount of tourists was destroying the ruins) .. Our tour guide was a bit of a tool, telling us about how smart the Mayans were amd spewing out facts and figures.. But didn't really tell us HOW they lived, who lived where and what they did with their life.. Just a bunch of useless information none of which I have retained.

I probably wouldn't do it again.

Michelle1959 September 4th, 2007 04:45 PM

oh, thanks, if I can't go into the ruins, I would want the excursion! it's like looking at a gift box but you aren't allowed to open it up and see what's inside!

I will definitely choose another excursion!

Deakon September 5th, 2007 02:09 PM

Let me clarify:

you're IN the ruins complex.. but you can't touch any buildings or go inside them. They're all roped off. You can walk around them and the complex itself.

Michelle1959 September 5th, 2007 04:03 PM

thanks for clarifying. still, I don't want to go to ruin and just look at the outsides, I'd want to go inside as well!

Michelle,
If the ruins they are referring to is Tulum, it is definitely worth it. Tulum is on a cliff and the scenery is beautiful. There are steps you can take to walk down to the water. Wear a bathing suit under your shorts so you can take a dip to cool off. We loved Tulum!!

Have a great time!!

Libragirl :D

Michelle1959 September 7th, 2007 01:48 PM

thanks, libragirl, but I decided if I can't go IN the ruins I'd rather not go on that excursion.

I bought a map of cozumel and may just take an a/c bus tour then walk around the shopping/restaurant area on my own!@

mehawk September 7th, 2007 04:31 PM

Michelle, there is another ruins tour on the island of Cozumel itself. This one allows one to climb on some of the objects and is short enough to allow for shopping. The Tulum and others are on the main pennisula and you have to take the ferry over.

Thanks, mehawk, I'll check out that excursion description!
