Cozumel Car Rental ?'s

I know this has been covered many times, but can't seem to find the info. We will be on the Ecstasy on a 5 day leaving 1/21/08. One of our ports is Cozumel. I have been looking into the options for rental cars in Cozumel. There are many options available. Have any of you out there done this and can you give me some pointers as to you experience.

I've rented in Coz several times. Drivers are a bit nutty, but otherwise it's an easy island to get around.

We're simply rented right at the pier. Just inspect the vehicle before you sign the papers and drive off.

I have had the best luck getting pricing from Avis(print this out, then when I arrive in Coz I go to Executive Car Rental on the second floor of the mall at the port and ask them what their rates are, they were higher of course, so I show them what I got from Avis and they match it and I don't have to take a cab down to Avis to get the better deal. So I am very happy. Plus the vehicles I saw were late model, clean and appeared to be well maintained. I also worked out a deal with the guy that when I got back I would give him cash to go fill up the car with gas I included a tip for him, so I wouldn't have to.
I was happy with them. No issues at all. Also, no matter where you rent a car from in Mexico make sure you purchase the additional insurance, even if you have the coverage on your insurance at home. Because they can detain you in Mexico until the cost of damages have been paid, that is not the way to spend a vacation.

Be careful renting on site. In Feb we rented a Jeep and the guy quoted us a price which wasn't too bad. But he wanted about 25% of it in cash and the rest was okay to put on a credit card. Didn't look at the final receipt until we got back on board, and guess what? It was only for the charged amount. Wonder where the cash part went? Hmmmmmm?

Thanks to all for the info. I am not sure what we will do yet, but I really want to rent a car and go out on our own.
