What is the best excurison for Roatan Island?

I've said this before: I am NOT a fan of the Cozumel ruins. You can't touch or go in to the buildings themselves... The guides were mostly useless and I found that the day was mostly lost because you spend 90 min getting there.. Hang out in the heat for a while, and then 90 min back...

I can't speak to the other ruins... But Cozumel is definitly a bust in this history buff's books.

We did the Altun Ha/ River Wallace excursion in Belize in Feb. It was great in our opinion. Got to see a lot, and were able to climb to the top of a pyramid. Have not been to any around Coz.
Enjoy.

Ruins at Tulum ( near Cozumel) were interesting However as stated above you can't climb them. One plus is a small beach near the ruins rated as one of the top 10 beaches in the Caribbean by the Travel Channel.
The ruins at Belize are much more extensive than Tulum and you can climb the pyramids for a better look. If I were only going to do one ruin tour I would do Belize again.

I also did the Altun Ha/ River Wallace excursion in Belize in Feb. There was not enough time at the ruins to really take a good look at them before having to bus to the river part of the excurision. We were able to climb the one temple, but overall I think that Tulum was the better site.
Tulum has been almost fully excavated, where Altun Ha has many sections remaining under the "dirt" to protect them until they can be properly excavated. I wouldn't waste your money on the River Wallace part, unless you have never been in a smaller boat before - I found I could have used this time more effectively doing something else.

The disadvantage of taking the Tulum tour is that it takes the entire day, and at Cozumel there are many options/tours that would be worth taking.
Also at Tulum you cannot climb the pyramids.

Belize has less tour options, and thus visiting mayan ruins at this stop may
work better in your situation.

Often the tour guide can make the difference. The one I had in Tulum was much superior to the one in Belize.

I posted some pictures of Altun Ha - if the link below doesn't work, just search my name.

Have fun,

CC

I agree with the other posters. We did the Altun Ha ruins as a private tour and had much more time to explore than those in the bus. Our guide was also very knowledgable.
Tulum is wonderful, but I liked being able to touch and climb the ruins.

I haven't had a bad experience with any of the ruins. True, most of them are cordoned off so you cannot climb upon them but that doesn't me from imagining what they looked like back in the eras and wonder how they were made.

my guide in Belize took me to Altun Ha, and then we toured a little of the downtown area. He then bought us lunch at a local hangout. We then were escorted by his wife into some local stores, where tourist are sledom seen. He gave me a few books about Belize and a bottle of cashew wine.
It was a great day and there were only four of us in his van.
