Default norovirus & other sickly stories

People are dirty. It never ceases to amaze me how people don't wash their hands after going to the bathroom. I remember taking a bathroom break from the piano bar and seeing a gentleman in a tux come out of the stall and walk right out. I also managed to catch the worst flu of my life the day our cruise ended. I blame dirty people

FOCUS:

Have you ever caught something from a cruise ship? norovirus, a stomach flu? Did the cruiseline do anything to help you out? And is there a trend for a time of year where sickness is worse on a ship?

I've been lucky, never caught anything. I do wash my hands though, ore than usual when cruising, for that exact reason. I also always pack the hand santizers and use them. May-be that really does help.

We were quite surprised the Conquest had NO hand sanitizers on the ship at all....surprising because, they ran a continuous video about the virus, on the tv...In the ladies room, they had a dispenser with small towel s in it, for you to open the door.

Hand sanitizers are mostly alcohol. Alcohol kills bacteria. The Noroviruses are, well, viruses. Viruses are not living organisms and they are not "killed" by alcohol. They can, however, be mostly "destroyed" by most sanitizers. Washing your hands is the only truly effective method for removing viruses (cold viruses included). There have been numerous studies as to the effectiveness of hand sanitizers on virus eradication. A recent study showed that hand washing removed 96% of viruses while the hand sanitizer removed 46%. Granted, that's better than nothing, but still, everyone needs to WASH.

What is the percentage of those that don't wash again after touching the restroom door after they exit ?

I have never got sick on a cruise; however, the multiple times that I have flown I have gotten a serious cold. I am more concerned about health isssues flying than I am on a cruise line.

My mom got the norovirus last time. Man it was awful. The good thing is that it only lasted 24 hours.

First of all, I try to avoid public bathrooms but when I can't, I ALWAYS[/color] use a paper towel to open the exit door because I've seen lots of people leave the stall and walk straight out. Lately I've been seeing trash cans right by the door because so many people are taking this precaution.

Quick Story:
One time I couldn't help myself and confronted someone in a public bathroom who was about to walk out without washing her hands. I couldn't believe what she said and the argument that followed between the two of us. She actually told me she didn't think it was necessary to wash her hands after doing her business. My jaw almost dropped to the floor (I really expected her to apologize and go wash her hands). We got into a heated argument about feces and germs and the little gifts she was leaving everyone on the door handle but she wouldn't budge. She didn't share my point of view. Gross!!! That's why I always use a paper towel ...I think about that disgusting woman each time I reach for a door handle. [/b]

I guess we need to keep educating people, that if you value your health you need to wash your hands after visiting the bathroom and many other times throughout the day.
