Default State Dept. may have overcharged for passports

Over the past year, as the government issued nearly 14 million new passports, it collected at least $111.4 million more in passport fees than its stated costs, according to calculations by the AP based on figures from State Department and congressional investigators.

I think the reason they made passports a requirement for traveling to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean was so that they could make more money

I know when I got my passport a few years ago it cost me a total of 107.00 and my husband got his this year and it was 97.00.
I heard they were going to raise the price and if they have made that much over and above what they should have they should not raise the price of them.
and we did not get our pictures done at the post office cause they charge 15.00 for it and we went else where for that.
so the price we paid did not include a picture.
so what is the going rate for a passport anyway?

I just renewed my passport and wrote out a check for $67 dollars. This did not include the cost for two pictures.

My friend who is cruising with me, and has NO passport, just sent off for hers. I have no clue how much she paid.

I do know if you have a Walgreen in your area, they make passport pictures, and their not that much.

dh and dd went to CVS to get their passport pics done ($7.99) and ended up having to go back and redo them because the passport office wouldn't accept them. They went back, gave the fellow a template to use for the next people, and got their money back! Found out it was only $10 at the passport office, so we did it there! We also paid using a money order and cash. I think that's why we got our passports back in 11 days without ordering expedited service!

I did talk with my friend who is getting the passport, but she is NOW waiting for her birth certificate to come back. She said she the the whole cost of the passport/pictures would be around $100.00 I think if you have a Walgreen, you can get the pictures taken cheaper, without any hastle.
