Default Cozumel - what to do in port?

Can anyone tell me what to do in Cozumel, after an excurion? Seems like a couple hours may be left over -- is it close to get into town, or something else, from the ship?

Any info appreciated - thanks!

I was in Cozumel in April 2006 and it was a nice time. We did a little shopping in the Puerta Maya shopping area and then went to Paradise Beach for a couple of hours. Highly recommend that beach.

If you have time and don't just want to shop...go to right of cruise pier and go down to Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville and just hang out...we had a great time there...there was a band.....dancing...crowd interaction. Also, down near that restaurant is a internet cafe that you can call home from (if u need to) for .35 minute.

The first time we were there we went shopping, I don't remember the name of the area but it was a short taxi ride and there was a lot of good shops, then went to Paradise Beach, then shopped again at the dock.
The second time we spent most of the day shopping and then went to Ckkuka Park (didn't spell it right).
The shops/stores are across the road from the ocean, and there are cute ponys pulling carts. Then there are some interesting shops. It's a big area and some good restaurants.

There are ruins there, horseback riding, shopping, zip lines, beaches

What excursion are you going on? I guess it depends on exactly when your excursion ends. I think my next trip to Cozumel in Jan we will spend all day at Chankkaub park. Can't go wrong there!

We love Chakkanaub State Park and Paradise Beach. Don't like the shops at the cruise port, they are all the same and vendors are very agressive. I would rather shop in the old part of town around the San Miguel Plaza (near the ferry dock).

I just had my first experience with Senor Frogs and Margaritaville and loved it. But, the Margarita's at Margaritaville were much stronger than I expected and I had two on an empty stomach. DH almost had to carry my giggling self back to the ship!

Here is a link you can try to check on almost everything in Cozumel and they even have coupons.

Have fun!

I'd also like to know what to do right by the port (i.e. shops, museums, etc.) that I can get to by walking so I don't have to do a ship excursion.

You don't have to do a ship excursion. As mentioned in previous posts, there are lots of things to do in Cozumel. You can take a taxi to any of these places very reasonably. I would just be sure to ask the total cost for your number of passengers before getting into the taxi, because they sometimes try to overcharge and say they meant "per person" on their quote.

There are lots of shops, Senor Frogs, Margaritaville, etc withing walking distance of the ship. The shops in the new mall area at the port are not my favorite though. I would rather walk a few blocks down to the older part of town to shop. The walk is very nice since you have the beautiful water to look at all along the way. If you can't walk that far, just get a taix and ask for San Miguel Plaza. It is right in the center of the older part of town.

No, I'm afraid that the shops on the long pier are history. There is a new area where, once you leave the ship, you walk up an open pier area (not as long). Then you are required to go up an escalator. From there be sure to stop and take advantage of a gorgeous view and photo op. You continue along a covered area that is lined with shops which all appear to be the same and are probably owned by the cruise industry. You have to pass by all of these shops to get to the down escalator which takes you back to street level, right across the street from the first escalator.

Once you are on street level you can walk to the left about 2 or 3 blocks to Margaritaville or you can walk to the right for several blocks into the old part of town, or get a taxi to to take you there or to the beaches etc.

This same port area sports the Senor Frog, Carlos and Charlies and other restaurants as well. If you go into Senor Frog's there is a beautiful vantage point to take photos of the ships in port. Just stand at the area overlooking the street and you will get some beautiful pics.

I think that also depends on which dock the ship docks at. They have 2 different ones - one is walking distance to the shops - the other isn't. We have stopped at both this past year. They are in the process of building another long pier however - don't know the status of that tho.

If you haven't already been to Chakanaaub, you are going to have a great time. I had downloaded some coupons for $2.00 off per person on the admission charge, but the taxi service gave us another coupon where we got our admission, a T-shirt, 1/2 price drinks & food for $16 each. Be sure to check on this.

Just had a funny experience there a couple of weeks ago. We walked down one of the trails to see the Iguanas and I was standing on a small ledge along the sidewalk taking pics of them. A guide came around a corner from behind and whistled for the lizzards, a sign that he had food. Well, I was caught between him and the creatures and they started running towards me. There were about 8 of them and they were huge! You know that I didn't waste any time getting out of their way!

How close together are Senor Frog, Carlos and Charlies, and Margaritaville?

Senor Frogs and Carlos and Charlies are at the Port Shop area and Margaritaville is about 2 or 3 blocks down the street. We noticed at Margaritaville, there were tables on the dock and some people were going into the water from the dock. There is also a shower on the dock to rinse off.

Does the Margaritaville in Cozumel have a slide that launches you into the water? The Margaritaville in Montego Bay does and it's a blast. I remember two big surprises when I got a shot from the Senorita at Carlos and Charlies. You can't go wrong in this port, great beaches and bars. 8)
