We were there 2 weeks ago, rented a car from Avis, they will pick you up from the cruiseship terminal, cost including taxes, etc....$19.52 for 1 day rental.....drive to the west part of the island, WEST BAY is where all the action is.
We've been to Roatan numerous times, friends of ours own a lodge and a restaurant over there. The west part of the island is where all the Yankees own property, businesses etc......the east part of the island is still very much undeveloped and unspoilt.
we did the pirantes birds and monkeys of the caribbean tour (LOVED IT!!!) and ended up at tabyana beach. it was GREAT - not crowded at all and we rented snorkel gear for like $5. taught my boyfriend to snorkel there since the water was calm and not too deep. amazing experience!

my wife and I were in Roatan in September and we ended up at a beach i believe called West Bay. I remember when you go there you could either go right, or left to this beach. The beach wasn't bad, but you had to pay $5 to get in (something the tour guy did not tell us). We did get free drink cards, so it probably costs us $3 in the end to get in. I had heard the other beach to the right (can't think of the name) was better, and free. Next time we will know better! All this was on the west end of course
Take a taxi to Half Moon Bay. Nice beach, crystal clear water and water sport rentals right on the beach. Don't tell anyone else as I'd hate it to be crowded next time we go. (May on the Legend ). Enjoy.
Roatan is off Honduras. There are 3 or so islands there and Roatan is probably the most popular. I went there 6 years ago for a diving vacation and stayed at an all-inclusive. That was a blast! In Sept we went there on a cruise on the Valor and again, it was great, but wish we would have went to the better beach. Our beach was OK, just the service to get there, cheap, but they didn't tell us about the extra charges to get into places etc. But still a place you need to visit.
Tabyana Beach, wow there is no way you could be disappointed. We did rent the snorkel gear which was $10 for the set for about two hours. We'll worth it.

We went in March and did a tour of the Island with Victor Bodden tours. You get a private tour guide with car for $25 per person. They pick you up at the port and tour the Islan. You can go to an iguna farm and tehn tour the Monkees at Victors house. We also went to lunch in the afternoon and snorkeled at a beach (Cant remember the name)
Its a great way to see teh Island and its not expensive for what you get.
Bodden tours has a website and our guide was Julio - He was great and our kids loved him..

Tabyana? No. the ship docks at a small dock on the south side of the island and the beach I think was on the north west part of the island a good 25min drive up and down hills.

Tabyana Beach.....gorgeous, clean, good snorkeling from the beach, lots of lounge chairs, massages on the beach, Tiki bar with live entertainment, hot buffet for a nominal fee, clean restrooms, friendly staff...the best!!!
Aprox how much should we expect to pay for a taxi to West Bay or Half Moon?
As for renting a car....is it safe as far as the locals??? What about the roads, signs, etc.... for an American driver? Is it worth it to rent a car for a day? Is there enough just to do on your own or is it just basically better to pay and stay at a beach all day???
Im trying to decide whether to rent a car or just take a taxi.
