I have been upgraded at least a full category on five of my seven cruises[
A category or two within a cabin "grade" is pretty common, but I don't really consider them upgrades. Same cabin on a different deck basically. Closer to the buffet maybe, but further from the dining room or visa versa.
I am actually surprised that they would even allow you to book a handicap cabin that far out from the sailing date, regardless of if they informed you that you may have to move.
I agree - moving up a few decks, as happened on our last cruise is not an upgrade.
Inside to outside (twice on the Paradise), outside to suite (also twice on the Paradise) and outside to outside balcony (Liberty this past January) were my upgrades.
As for booking the cabin, we are traveling in a party of four and this particular cabin was the only one in the class rated for four passengers. We booked the new Spa level of cabin on the Carnival Splendor, that includes increased access to the Spa area after hours.

Once again a very heartfelt thank you to everyone that has helped with our many questions on here.
To respond to how we got this wonderful upgrade:
1. It was a little Christmas Spirit.
2. We did book very early, May/07, balcony guarantee to be exact.
3. We booked with a PVP, straight through Carnival. I have always booked through a TA , but that may soon change.
4. We stayed in contact with our PVP on a regular basis, and always asked about the possibilities of upgrades.
5. Crossed our fingers.
Good luck to everyone on getting some upgrades very soon.

When we had our "Holy Upgrade", it was also from an 8C balcony to an 11 suite on the Spirit. We had specifically picked our cabin at the back of the ship. Not the wraparound, but close enough for us. When we got to the port, they told us we had a great upgrade! As much as I would have loved it back there, the cat 11 was absolutely worth it! By the way, our entire group got the upgrade. We had 4 cabins booked. Three 8C's and one 4A. The 3 8C's all went to 11's, and the 4A went to a 6A. Not too shabby!
We thought maybe someone was willing to pay for the 8C, but not for the suite, hence the upgrade?
As to newbies getting more upgrades to get them hooked, 5 were experienced cruisers, and 3 were newbies.
Does anyone ever get an upgrade that booked a specific cabin......or does this only happen if you go the " category guarantee" route??

I am happy with the "upgrade gods". An inside stateroom does not bother me but we are being upgraded from a 4E cat to a 8H! I am very much looking forward to seeing the balcony! I am going with a first-timer so I am excited for her too!

On the Spirit we booked a specific cabin; 8277 at the back of the ship, and when we arrived at the pier we were upgraded to a category 11 suite! SWEET! I was excited as well for my friend who was a 1st-timer.
Of course, my sister-in-law was all upset because she thought she was being hoodwinked into a lesser cabin. We went from deck 8 to deck 6. She went to her original cabin and was surprised to see someone else in her cabin. It was only then that she realized they had written her new cabin # on her docs! I had to calm her down and explain that this was a GOOD thing. Bigger cabin, bigger balcony, bigger bathroom, dressing room, more space, etc...
