Default Recent Victory Cruisers - Opinions Welcomed!!!!

Lets hear about it. Likes & dislikes. I'm headed out on this ship
Jan. 20, 2008, just a month away and I want to know what you thought about your trip.

San Juan at night? Stay on the ship? Or go and see what?
St. Thomas, never mind, my wife has that one covered. She found out about the shopping. St. Marteen?

Fill me in. Thanks

Hello, I recently did the Victory cruise and i'm a first time cruiser. I heard all the hoopla about crusing and talked to several people before I left. This site was very helpful.

I also talked to people while on the cruise and heard them comparing it to other trips on that same boat, and other cruise lines .

The consenses was that it was the worst cruise they had ever had. I agreed but I was comparing it to Club Med resorts.

The ship is very nice. Its very retro neon lighting, spanish tiles, kinda goddy I thought. But flashy. Kinda hard to get around. You have to go up two floors to get over the other end of the ship and then down two floors. Everyone complained about that part. Other ships have a straight access from end to end. There are 3 banks of elevators so its a bit confusing. But you'll get the hang of it.

We had tropical storm Olga with us so we didnt even go to San Jaun. It was so rough the captain finally made an announcement that we were skipping that island all together and we headed out to St Thomas. So as you can imagine, it was hell all the way there for 3 days!!!

We got our port fees credited back to us but thats it. So really the trip was two islands and then back to sea. St Thomas was no where near as nice as St Maarten. But you'll like both places.
Snorkelling was too rough from the storm so we couldnt see anything in the water.
They took us out at St Maartan to dive and turned around and came back to the tiki hut tour where the snorkellers were and we did a dive there. Again stirred up with no visibility. several ships sunk there to look at .

So we did a 20ft dive. Rip off for the money. They charged us 70 instead of 100 for one dive instead of two. We shouldnt have been charged for that dive either. Waste of time .

The other cruise line cancelled the excursions and gave full refunds. I thought it was a money grab personally. But if you're going to the tiki hut to snorkel , it will be worth the time and money for you as you'll be able to see better!!

As far as Food. Bring clothes to dress up for the nightly dinners. Thats the only place worth eating. The other food is buffet style like you'd get at any cafeteria. Not very tasty . I thought everything was bland. I looked forward to the dessert table and it had some fancy cakes but they didnt taste like anything? disappointed.

Good salads and good roasted pork, beef or chicken each day. Plus all your usual stuff inbetween. It just sucked with all the line ups waiting for food. That was annoying. You'd be 50 deep in line!!

There is a pizza place and grill with burgers at the back. That was nice for a change. shorter lines.

Icecream bar is just a machine to make a soft cone. there arent any fixings for the icecream, like sprinkles or caramel topping. Just the icecream. And most of the time it was either not working or closed and you had to go to the other end to the other machine.

You drink counter had the same problems. Either the ice wasnt working or the drink station was closed. The juice out of the machine was warm hence you need the ice. Thought that was weird that it wasnt chilled??

It doesnt sound like a big deal but trying to walk through hundreds of stupid people with your tray to get to the other fountain place was a chore. Then you had to find a seat.

I didnt like the airconditioning everywhere. I have never been on a trip where I was freezing all the time? I wore a sweater at night or brought one with me . The one I wore to the airport. So I looked pretty stupid with my fleece and my dress on . Wish I had thought about clothing options more. Old people love to dress up in wild dresses. But coctail dress and a mans suit is fine. Two nights are formal and the other nights you can be somewhat casual although I found most were pretty dressy every night.

The FUN SHIP wasnt that fun. No activities during the day around the pool unless you're into bingo inside the boat out of the sun. Seemed to be stuff for old people more than my age. ( 40 )

Bingo, casino, meetings in the stage area...... I couldnt leave my stuff on the chair and go inside out of the sun to all those things and enjoy the pool? I thought there would be more outside events. A guy carved an ice sculpture the last day. Hairy chest contest one day. Thats about it? Not even compareable to club med activities.

The big screen had news on for 2 hours each day, then the same video everyday with the underwater fish , and last but not least the corny old Barry Manilow on stage show. ughhhhhh I thought I was gonna jump overboard after that. They had a calypso band from 12 -2pm each day. Typical regaae , red red wine... blah blah blah.

I'm complaining a lot but I just didnt have a good trip . I overheard everyone else complaining and comparing it and not liking it.

I was seated for dinner at 8pm so I missed the shows at night unless you wanted to go after your dinner to the 10 pm show. Too tired to watch it after eating!

The only singles even was in the disco at midnight? huh? I was in bed by then. The piano lounge was for sing along old stuff. The casino band guy had the 70's moustache and old people danced to their ballroom 50's music.

Oh hope you like your picture taken. God that was annoying. They really push the photo sales. People are lined up every night to get photos done and each dinner they have some one to pose with. Dancing girl outfits. And off the ship when you go for your excursion they make you stand and pose. So each night you find the board with all the pictures and then order them.

Theyre big on pushing the drink of the day. You pay about $6 for that, then you tip the guy and find out later you get charged for a tip on the computer. So the drink ends up about $7 each. AGH!!!!! I got booze on board by putting it into another container and made my own drinks most of the time, for by the pool . Then bought drinks at the main dinner at night. Beer by the bucket seemed to be the best deal. You get 4 beer in a bucket of ice. You save a buck 50. big deal.

I went to club med resorts and not only is booze free, premium booze is free, water pop is free, coffee is free, red bull is free, gatorade is free. The $2 for pop out of your room is stupid. Its all about extra fees added onto everything. Then you're pressured to tip everyone.

The sail and sign pass thing is a card you get and you just flash it for all your purchases. Thats fine but then you have to stand there and sign the receipt and take your copy. How annoying is that when you're in your bathing suit tanning wanting a drink and you have to sign and take receipts. where do you stash all those pieces of paper?

Someone walks by you asking every 5 seconds and asks if you want a drink. God thats annoying. Most of the time I just pretended I was asleep and didnt answer them.

The staff was nice on the boat. That I can say was impressive. EVERYONE is very friendly. They remember your names.

I just found that I didnt have a good time, I paid almost double by the time the trip was over. We had the storm so it sucked with all the sea sickness.

Get the prescription patch that you wear behind your ear and dont get a room near the top or near the front of the ship!!! Oh my god it was horrible. The maid cleaning my room was puking on that trip !! It rocks a whole lot more up front!!

You'll probably have a good time. Just not an awesome FUN SHIP time. Not up to my standards. I expected to be wowed and I left disappointed.
You might have an entirely better trip. Wish you luck.

Expect okay food, good service, a lot of wheel chairs and slow walking people, long lines and mostly inside entertainment. No pool activities.

Well, thanks a lot, kellybelly ! For months my daughter and I have been excited and happily anticipating our cruise on the Victory in May. I now will live in fear for the next 5 months that I made a terrible mistake in my choice of a ship and have wasted long-saved monies. Bummer. Your information may be advantageous for people not yet having booked a cruise but for us that have it's a horrible feeling hat will last for months now until we sail.

Go for a nice dinner in Old San Juan rather then eating on the ship. We went to the Parrot Club, and it was great. Food, drinks (mojitos!), atmosphere, dining on the patio under the starts... everything.

Nancy1942;

We heard the same kind of reports before we sailed the Glory this last Feb. When we experienced it for ourselves it was the total opposite of the other posters. I too worried that I had made a mistake, but we had a great time and can't wait to go again. Not everything was perfect, as things seldom are, but 99% was great. Keep and open mind, and you will have a great time.

You often times make your own fun.

I recently complained about my cruise on victory ship DEC 09\07.
I hope I didnt freak anyone out. I was a single cruiser and found it not to my liking.
If you're a couple and you have someone else to talk to and do things with on the cruise i'm sure you're going to have a great time. I found the funniest thing was that when I tried to talk to other couples the wives or girlfriends clung to their mates as if I was trying to steal them away. Come on girls thats insulting. If i had a significant other with me, i'm sure people would have been more open to me. Thats just human nature.

It just wasnt my cup of tea. I'm a first time cruiser and I compared it to other trips i've taken. People on that cruise complained a lot around me about the same things I was thinking but didnt want to admit.

Maybe i'm picky I dont know. I think i'm pretty open minded and dont expect everything to be perfect. Maybe it was the fact that in my room I was practically falling out of my bed it was so rough. While others on the second floor didnt feel a thing. I hadnt slept the first 3 days and was very irritated by everything. So that could be it too.

Plus I did excursions that involved the water sports. Mine were ruined by the weather. Others had an awesome time on the islands as they did beach or land excursion.

So let me revamp what I said earlier, especially to Nancy one of the readers that replied to me. Dont worry about your trip , you will be fine.

You'll have nice weather, you'll enjoy the shopping on shore and you'll meet tons of people. Be patient with the line ups, dont expect great food at the buffets, and you'll enjoy the nightly dinners. They are the best food and the waiters are amazing. they even dance for you at dinner.

Yes I could have changed my 8pm dinner. I just thought i'd tell anyone that by that time you're hungry by the time you finish around 9pm , youre tired after a big meal. At least you dont have to dine with the kids. Theyre all at the 5pm dinners.

Good luck to all the cruisers coming up. It just wasnt for me. If you're single try a club med resort and you'll see the difference!
I think I need a pool to swim in and beach to walk on . Thats more my style.

No two cruises are the same even week to week. When you sail likely the Captain, much of the crew, and the entertainers will be different people. The weather will not be the same. To assume you might not have a good time because someone who cruised six month before you had a bad experience is just not valid. The trip will be what you make of it. Go and have fun. If you are still worried that a mistake has been made you should be able to get a full refund on a May cruise.

We went on the Victory on April 29, 2007 and had the nicest time! The food was awesome, the ports were great fun, especially St. Martin, and the staff was wonderful.
Been on the ship twice and loved it twice. Would do it again in a heartbeat!

Thank you all , I am breathing easier now It was such a long, detailed list of bad things about my ship that I almost stopped breathing. Since it is a "Fun SHip", have any of you that sailed on the Victory happy with the activities? I sailed on Carnival but decades ago and we were busy all the time with their activities. Thanks again and Merry Christmas to all

Don't listen to Negative Nate. You'll have a blast, and when you get back, you'll be back here asking which cruise you should book next.

I just returned from my 5th voyage on the Victory - over the Thanksgiving holiday. We had a fabulous time. Absolutely, no question, not everything is going to be perfect, but...I just could not read past kellybelly's 2nd paragraph - she wasn't happy with one thing! It's all what you make it. The food and entertainment were both absolutely fine. Yep, the lines for the buffets on the Lido deck were somewhat long, but hey, you've got 23 hrs and 45 minutes left in the day to do what you want. The service in the dining room and by our cabin steward were just as I've remembered on my previous 30 cruises. If someone cannot have a good time on a ship with so much going on, well, I'm just not sure what's wrong here people. Again, not everything is going to be perfect, but we had a blast!

FWIW: traveling solo is not highly recommended by CruiseMATES, that is why we have a large singles cruisers area where people can talk about the solo cruising experience.

As for Victory, I am sure you will have a good time, but I have heard reports that it is one Carnival ship that has gotten a little lax with service standards. This usually shows up in some little things like slow service at dinner, etc.

Stay on your game and have a good outlook and I am sure you will love your cruise. If you have any problems, take them to higher-ups (like the Maitre D' or Hotel Manager) and make sure you are satisfied with the results.
