Default CARNIVAL VICTORY.....STORM OLGA

I just got back from DEC 9th cruise during the tropical storm OLGA.

Wow that trip sucked!!! Never get a room on the top floor or near the front of the ship. Sea sickness from Hell!!!!!!

We only had 3 stops. San Juan, St Thomas and St Maarten. We didnt make it to San Juan due to weather. The excursions in both St Thomas and St Maarten were a waste of money because you had no visibility in the water. The ship should have told us not to go. A money grab in my eyes. We were told that the other cruise lines cancelled theirs and they got a full refund.

On route to St Thomas the pools were closed and the hot tubs emptied due to weather. I know its not their fault but what a way to spend your days. The people were puking. The lady cleaning my room was puking.

I was disappointed with the food. And the lines for food. Oh my god.

There were no real activities by the pool. The same video played on the big screen each day. Under water video. And then corny Barry Manilow came on . I was ready to jump over board!

The ship was full of 80 year olds with wheel chairs and FAT people. I was a single girl on the trip and bored out of my mind. Unless you want to play bingo, or go to the casino.
I was booked for 8pm dinners so I missed the shows at 8 and was too tired for the 10pm shows especially after eating dinner.

So all in all the food was cafeteria bland. God the dessert table that I had dreamt about was even boring. No taste to the cheese cake?

We missed 1 out of 3 islands. The water excursions were a waste of time and the activities on board were geared towards the old. I wont cruise again. The staff was nice but thats about all I found.

Any one else like the trip? I heard 3 people died. Not sure what cruise line but the week of dec 9th . A lady at the airport said a young kid died alcohol poisoning, older man had a heart attack and they couldnt get a helicopter to him, and an old lady died due to the OLGA storm?

There are 6 coffins on board at all times so I'm told. I'm surprised that more people dont keel over considering the AGE and WEIGHT of these people! Wow!!!!!!

Anyways disappointed. I'd love to hear your comments. FUN SHIP? Who's kidding who?

I was on this cruise and a great time with my girlfriend (we are both 24). The weather was unfortunate the first couple of days but it was pretty good the rest of the way. Although you do not expect a tropical storm in December, there is obviously still a chance of it. I truly believe the officers made the best decision to skip San Juan. We would have gotten there at 10pm and would have to leave at 12am to get to St. Thomas on schedule so it was not worth the stop. We just went with the flow and a had a great time regardless. I went to Coki Beach in St. Thomas and Orient Beach in St. Martin. I had a nice, relaxing time at both beaches. We went there on our own, we never book through the cruise line since it's so much more expensive. If you were unhappy with the 8pm seating, you were more than welcome to ask for an earlier time. That is what the Maitre 'd is for. We asked for a table for 2 and originally got a table for 8. We asked for a change and got it by the 2nd night. Our food was always good to great in the dining room and we had the most excellent waiters in the Pacific dining room, Clyde and his assistant waiter, I forget his name. He said he just started recently but would never know it. I didn't hear about anyone dying and wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't true. All in all, I had a great time on the cruise, regardless of the weather. Funny how two people can have two completely different experiences on the same ship at the same time.

"The ship was full of 80 year olds with wheel chairs and FAT people."

Wow, It's been a long time since I have run across someone so PERFECT. I can't beleive you didn't get a personal appology from Carnival for the bad weather. I wish you good health. Maybe you will not be judged so harshly by others when your old and not so mobile.
Oh, and stay away from the deserts, you might get FAT!!

Hmm, I have to say this, fat people have fun too....I don't sit around like a blob on a lounge chair. I get bored sitting on a deck chair suntanning. I'm usually wandering about, checking out each area, gambling, shopping, and taking in the activities onboard.

Boy, I'm glad you were not sailing with me too! I can understand the fustration of the storm for sure (been there done that) and its not carnivals fault (as you say) but maybe you should have taken more responsibility and cancelled the excursions yourself knowing the weather would have pushed things into shore. I'm sorry you had such a bad time - but then again, a cruise is what you make of it so it must reflect a little on you huh? I'm cruising in 3 weeks --------- and if I COULD take my 80 year old dad, I would in a heartbeat WITHOUT question as he enjoyed crusing as much as us youngsters did (he's dead now...so thats one less for you to worry about). And........I have to sign this as
The FAT person (who recently had a bypass...lol).

Sounds like a lot of "Fat" people were offended by this post about the Victory Although the cruiser's post has multiple complaints about the Victory, most readers seem to zoom in on the "Fat" comment. I find it odd that this is upsetting to some since over-weight to obese adults/children make up the majority of our society today. Why upset ...majority rules, right

Jellybelly....tough luck about the Storm. Very unfortunate that it adversely affected your cruise experience but don't give up on cruising. Normally, it is a wonderful vacation.

Really?

CDC U.S. Obesity Trends 1985–2006 -
During the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States.

CDC website states ...."Results from the 2003-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), using measured heights and weights, indicate that an estimated 66 percent of U.S. adults are either overweight or obese and 17 percent of children and adolescents ages 2-19 years are overweight."

Cheryl...I bet you're not! You are on the road to a new healthier you and I would love to wager against that one!!

Since I'm in the bracket of the obese population, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one on the cruise that has to deal with it. It's like going to the gym and all you see are "Barbie" dolls.

As far as old folks..well guess I am nearing that group too. I only hope i am healthy enough to be able to cruise when I reach retirement age.

I think that the original poster was just on the wrong ship. Hopefully you will find one that you can fit in with, because cruising is a great way to enjoy a vacation.

An unpleasent cruise experience sure beats a great day at work anytime!

Rick.. I am well aware of weight as a growing problem. And I know we should always believe what the government agencies tell us.

But, I'm also aware of the some of the criteria used. Even now "experts" are arguing over what measure is the correct means of determing what people's optimum weight is. In recent history Body Mass Index was the accepted measure. However, "experts" now indicate that it is not an absolute measurement and there is margin for error when using BMI to calculate health risk depending on body-type (ectomorphic, mesomorphic or endomorphic) and bone structure and density.

There's also been a dramatic rise in Bulemia and Anorexia in North America, for men and women in the past decade.

No doubt people should work at keeping themselves as healthy as possible. But extremes on either spectrum are dangerous. People should be encouraged to get themselves healthy! But, I dont think cynicism helps in that regard.

I lost 42lbs last year myself with diet and excecise. People who hadn't seen me in awhile said... "you look great, are you dying?"

And btw.. it's also true that very soon the majority of people in North America are going to be OLD. If majority rules then there's gonna be real trouble

Kuki, "Experts" will always argue. We can agree to disagree on this particular CDC study. This particular study reflects what I see everyday. No "cynicism" intended.....I just don't think that obese people should be so offended by the word "Fat". I absolutely agree that "People should be encouraged to get themselves healthy!"

We can agree that over weight is a "growing problem"...pun intended I find that exercise, smoking cigarettes and a fine cigar from time to time really helps keep my weight down.

Congratulations on losing 42 lbs the "old Fashioned way"

KellyBelly, I guess you were just on the wrong ship. The lovely Mrs. Jones (Vita) and I were on the Carnival "Legend" the week of December 9th, in an upper deck, forward cabin, and we had a great time! Seas were a little bit rough, but certainly not rough enough to make anyone sick that I saw, and all of our ports were open with crystal clear water. We did indeed, have a wonderful cruise. So sorry you had a bummer of a time. Choose your ship, and your cabin more carefully next time.

Sounds like you started out on your cruise on the wrong foot.
Only thing you are right about is that Carnival can not control
the weather.
It takes all kinds of people to make up this world and not just
you little skinny people.
Sad to have to tell you that.
Like everything else when you cruise you cant depend on someone
else making you happy and showing you how to have fun.. You have to know how to have fun first of all. For your late dinner I think we all pick when we want to eat so
you cant blame that on anyone but your self for eating late.
10 to late for the shows???
For old people, people in wheel chairs and fat people they like to have
fun too... Cruising is not just for the skinny girls..
We all make the world go around.
And as my Mother always told me dont throw stones when you live
in a glass house... And as you can see with your comments you must
have several broken windows.
Life is short and we all have to know how to enjoy it while we can.
So I hope you can try cruising again some time and enjoy your self.
I have always met so many wonderful people and enjoyed my cruising.
IF it rained while on a cruise there were many things you could do other
than play bingo.. I am in my 50's and hardly had time to go to bed.
The words OLD and FAT are not nice to use. We know that 99% of us
are not perfect.. That 1% cant be for real.

Live Life to the fullest ....

I am a 59 year old fat lady. I love bingo and play a few games when on a cruise. I also love to do adventurous outings. Recently I was on the Liberty, in Costa Rica I went white water rafting and enjoyed it a lot. It is unfair of you to assume that older folks do not do anything interesting. We had a man 76 on the rafting tour too. He had a marvelous time and was more in shape than a lot of the younger people on the tour. Most cruises I generally choose at least one adventure tour. As for the food on Carnival, I find it to be very good and varied. I usually get to most of the venues on lido and have never found anything to be bland. The dining room fare is very good , well prepared and nicely presented. Your dining time could have been changed by asking the Maitre'D. Yes, you will find lines when you go to the buffets. did you expect it to be there just for you?I know you think that some of the onboard passenger participation games sound boring. Did you attend any? I have many times and got the best laughs at those games. The Newly Weds and Not so Newly weds game is a hoot! People are funny and will say the darndest things. I have gone home from a cruise with a sore throat from laughing so hard. Try focusing on the positve rather than the negative. A cruise is what you make it. If you are determined to have a lousy time........you will.

It appears to me that the OP is just a very unhappy person to begin with, who didn't want to cruise, and after trying it has determined that they won't again.

That's ok. More room for you and I!!!

Default I feel better

After reading through this thread I am even MORE excited about my wedding and first time cruise in July! I am a little hung up about the way my body changed after having 2 kids and was worrying about all the beautiful, perfect people in the bathing suits! Now I am content to know that (the majority of) cruisers are normal people, just like me! :-)

I haven't heard a thing about any cruises originating from the Port of Houston anytime soon. I know where the port is, I used to live literally 4 miles from it, but from what I have read in the local newspaper, there isn't any line there as of yet.

Pick your company wisely! Hang around people who are going to help you become all God created you to be.
