Yes everyone has to have a sail and sign card to use like credit card and yes again you can apply cash if its a 7 day cruise you are required to post a 200.00 balance per person and you can add more as needed or if needed and will be refunded any on last cruise day.hope this helps also your sail and sign card is your room key.

You also must have a sail-and-sign card to depart, and return to the ship in port, and even when you return to your home port to disembark the ship. It's not only a credit card, and a room key, it's also the main means of I.D. for passengers. That's how the line keeps track of who is aboard, and who is still at Carlos and Charleys!

We just came off of the Fantasy & the Sail & Sign card was NOT a room key...
They gave a separate card with punched hole for the cabin door lock...

some of the older Carnival ships such as the fantasy, ectasy, inspiration etc have both a room key and a Sign & Sail card. the newer ships have the upgraded sign & sail card;

To funny skymaster!!! Yes the sail and sign card is separate from the room key on the fantasy class ships. I wish they would tie in with the newer ships on that aspect as its a pain to carry both keys around. :-) Enjoy your cruise!
Bob ----- I leave for the Fantasy in a few weeks. Hope you had as good a time as I PLAN on having! :-)

On the Inspiration, the sign-n-sail card is also the room key. They probably upgraded it recently, but I just looked at our cards from that ship, and as of 7/21/07, it was a room key as well.
Have a great cruise!

Yeah your right the INspiration was the S&S card and key combined; it was the imagination prior to phase one of the upgrade when they had the two separate .....

I liked the seperate keys because the older ships had keys with holes in them instead of a magnetic stripe that meant I could keep it with me even when swimming

I LOVE IT!!!!! So true...there is no better entertainment then watching the Amazing Race - CarlosNCharlies version, as drunks race to get back to the ship before she sails... down the Punta Langosta pier!!!

Every one does need a sail and sign card for ID purposes. You can however, have the pursers desk disable the card so children can't use it to charge things to your account!

It has been said that you are required to put down a certain amount of cash, Well not exactly. They suggest that you put 200 per person, however that is not required. On our last CCL cruise on the Glory, March of 2007, we only put 200 for the 2 of us total. They just want some kind of deposit, we managed to get a $17 check the last night.

The only problem with putting down a cash deposit or a limited cash deposit is that you may hear yourself being paged to the Purser's Desk at some time during the cruise. That is what they do when you are not in your cabin at the point that your deposit is close to depleted. If you do not respond to the page, they will disable your card. Also, you are not allowed off the ship at debarkation (a good thing maybe ) if you owe any money.

It is far easier to just use a credit card and use a bit of restraint in running up charges.

We have used credit cards for our sail and sign accouont before, and what happens is they put a hold on the card ( and they dont tell you how much ) and if you spend some of that, they put another hold on it.

I work at a hotel that basically does the same exact thing. So, if they put a hold for 400 the first day and you spend 150, they put another 400 hold on the card, that means now there is 800 on hold for your card. Even if they release the first hold of 400, your bank will not release the funds for up to 10 business days ( although most are within 3 ). With this being said, they did this to us the first cruise we took. I know there was plenty of money in the bank to cover any and all charges we made, but the card declined on the 4th day. Come to find out there was over 2500 in holds on the card and our bank shut it down for security reasons. Nothing like not being able to call your bank while you are in the middle of the ocean.

If you use cash, or credit, you can check you balance on the tv on most if not all of the newer ships, and you can always stop by the pursers desk to check you account. Which is a very smart thing to do anyway, to see if there were any mistakes on it. Im sure we have all read about how many mistakes are made on the accounts.
