Yes, you can buy ALL sort of junk and trinkets at the Straw Market.
Easy to get to, as you exit the terminal building, just follow the road to the right, cannot miss it. Maybe 5-10 minute walk thru town.

Bill, here is a photo of the straw market and Senor Frogs that I took from the ship, as you can see they are not too far away from where the cruise ships dock. It is an easy walk. The straw market is the one that sort of resembles a large white tent.

Just be prepared for aggressive vendors. We were just there in early December. The isles are very long and narrow. It can be claustrophobic in there. The vendors can get pushy but I found that a firm "no thank you." was enough. Mostly, every time I picked up something just to look they would start offering me lower prices to get me to buy.

Yes, the straw market is a fun place to go for trinkets, hats, etc. If you like bartering with the venders, you will have a good time in there. The venders do a good job at trying to make you feel guilty about not wanting to spend as much as they might like you to.

Claustrophobic is exactly right. I felt as though I couldn't breathe. Stuff seems to be piled up to the tall ceiling and the walk way is so narrow that only one person at a time could pass by. The vendors were aggressive as stated. But I liked Nassau overall. Atlantis was amazing!

The original straw market was one block closer to the ship but burnt to the ground a year or so ago. The new one is just a bit larger IMHO and is right next door to Senor Frog.

It is a great place for those little trinket souvenirs. The vendors are eager but not unpleasant so shopping for the best price can be fun if you like to barter and negotiate. Just remember that EVERYTHING in the straw market is either a knockoff or a fake (designer bags, sunglasses, etc.). So you will not be getting a genuine Louis Vuitton bag for the bargain price of $70. However, you will get a halfway decent cheap knockoff bag that you can probably bargain down to less than $50.

Some people do not like Nassau. I have always enjoyed it, Paradise Island, Atlantis Aquarium and the general atmosphere of Nassau. I travel solo and have always felt safe and have never been negatively approached or hassled.

LOl It has been many years since I was in the straw market. It seemed like the straw stuff would break just as soon as the ship was out of port. I did find it to be fun to wander around in.

I am very claustrophic. I wanted to buy the grown kids the t shirts they wanted from nassau when we went this past May. Not knowing what the straw market was like I followed a very aggressive seller from outside where she found me to the very middle of the marketplace where she said she had t shirts 5 for $10 in good material quality. By the time I was in the middle of the straw market and I paid for the shirts I couldn't get out and started to panic. I couldn't go forward nor could I go backwards that is how crowded it was. The only thing that kept it together for me was I had a small hanging fan on my neck which kept me a few degree's cooler until I could be led out of there by some very considerate sellers who knew I was having a major problem breathing. There was no air at all in there, it must have been 120 degrees inside. There were to many people, booths and items on top of each other. It was the worst experience of my life. Its to bad they didn't make the tent with wider aisles because there seemed to be alot of good island junk to buy if desired but because of the narrow aisles and how everyones booth were plastered on top of each other one could not focus on anything. The sellers were worst than the ones I encountered in Mexico. They were very aggressive! I am going back in April but I won't be going inside that market on that trip.

If you intend to go up and down the very narrow, crowded corridors in the " straw market " , best grease yourself with vaseline first--it's that crowded in there. Whatever you do, don't fall--more than likely you would never get up !
Other than hot and very crowded, it's fun !!

Ro, you are right. I will not go back to the straw market. Those are the MOST aggressive and rudest vendors we have encountered yet. If you even glance at an item, they are all over you, and don't ever pick it up to examine it! One did not even want us to take a photo of his wood carvings without paying him.

I will stick to Atlantis and Blackbeard's Cay next time, both are beautiful places.

Right on Nothin! The Straw market can keep their items. I haven't gone to Atlantis yet maybe that is where I will head in April.

We were there last in May of 2006. We booked the Blackbeard's Cay excursion through Carnival. As I recall, it was very inexcpensive as compared to some of the other excursions they had. We took a small boat from Nassau out to the private island and it took about 30 minutes. The beach was beautiful with umbrellas and beach chairs, and the water very warm, blue, and clear. When I was chest deep in the water, I could still see my toes on the sandy bottom. You can get food/drinks on the beach or go up to the restaurant area. This was a very relaxing outing. For an additional cost you can also book the stingray swim at the same beach. We didn't want to get in the water with the rays so we stood on the pier and watched.

Back at the ship we had lunch, changed and took a taxi to Atlantis where we explored the casino and hotel and went to the aquarium. We then just walked the grounds of the hotel for a while before returning to the ship. I made sure to get a players card from the casino while I was there (for my collection).

Hope you have fun, we might be going again in September ourselves.

You're welcome 8) We did have a lot of fun and a very relaxing day. We even had time to go back to the ship, change, and have lunch between the trip to Blackbeard's Cay and our trip to Atlantis.

We went to the straw market and I have never seen anything liked it was a little nervous at first and then started bargaing and had a blast i got a great purse and a few sourveniers. The purse held up great actually wasn't expecting much out of it. Its a good experience just to say you have been there I would go back but its not an all day thing it's something you do if you have the time. Some of the vendors were rude very rude but we just laughed it off and went on to the next one. Go and go knowing it's going to be crowded and hot but you will never see anything like it again.

I still have to warn cruisers if you are claustrophic or hate very hot places with no air in them and very tight closed in areas to walk which are crowded with people both working and buying then this straw market is not a good experience and its not fun either. You can do the same bargaining in the local stores for good prices and items desired without taking all the abuse of the people working in the straw market and the bad conditions inside. Once was enough for us!
