I'm sorry to bring up the passport issue again but I'd like to hear an opinion.
I am going on the Freedom on 4/19/08 with a friend. I have a passport, but got married a few years ago and never got my name changed on my passport. My friend has never had a passport.
I know how to go about getting mine corrected, and how my friend needs to get hers, but do you think we have enough time to do this before our cruise? My fear is that we send in our documents to get the passports, and then not only not get the passports, but not have our ID to take with us (birth certs.).
At this point in time, do you think I can get the passports done, or should I just not bother and take the brith certs. for ID. I would like to get the passports, but am just nervous. And yes I know, I should not have procrastinated...
Here's what I would do. I have been married 10 and a half years, I got my passport right before we were married so I just left in in my maiden name and simply paper clipped our certified (from the courthouse) copy of our marriage license inside the cover. That is acceptable documentation to explain the name change. I never did the name change until a year or so ago when I renewed my passport. As far as your friend is concerned, I think the return intervals have improved dramatically and since it is a pretty sure bet that you will need passports going forward I would simply apply for the passport, if they are nervous about not getting it back quickly enough then pay extra for expedited service. Your friend may opt to order duplicate birth certificates and marriage licenses (if there has been a name change from what is on the birth cert.) just for peace of mind, and it's always good to have an extra copy around.
Your friend has plenty of time! We just did ours with a turnaround of 30 days. I was also told if you don't get it back in time, your driver's license and receipt of you passport order will work too but I'm not sure if this is true.

You don't need to renew it, do as Beenie says and just bring along your marriage certificate and paperclip it to the opposite page to the pic/signature and that will do. I doubt they would make you get a new one because that would just be a cash grab!
Americans have it easy, your passports are good for 10 years. Canadian passports are good for five years only and then you have to renew. Alas, it is easier to renew a passport now, but the price is the same. I have to renew mine this summer as it expires at the end of 2008.
