Carnival Victory for 1st time cruiser & experienced crui

I am getting ready to introduce my fiance' to cruising and am considering booking a balcony on The Victory for August 08 for the following reasons

1. Karen hates flying so leaving from NYC (We are from Staten Island) would save that hassel.

2. The length (4 or 5 days) is perfect for a 1st time cruiser in my opinion.

3. It would offer me new ports besides the usual Caribbean ports that I have been to numerous times.

Can anyone who sailed on this ship/intinerary give me your thoughts on this idea?

Joe-

We are sailing the Victory next month. We however are doing the Caribbean stops. So will be able to help you later with the ship.

As for the 4 or 5 day idea, that is what we did our first time out. Were afraid that a 3 day wouldn't be enough if we enjoyed it. And 7 would be too long if we didn't enjoy it. So we opted for a 5 day. Just right.

That lead us to another 5 day (great deal) and then a 7 day. This past summer did a 6 day and are awaiting our next 7 day. Yup, guess you could say were are hooked:)

Always better to be able to drive rather than fly. Save that extra $ for spending in the ports or on the ship. Being from Upstate NY we know how expensive it is to fly out of wonderful NY State.

Once we return, we will post about the ship.

Until then, enjoy the planning part. One of my favorite times.

Safe sailing.

We are going on the Victory in May, so I am interested in info too.

I would like to know everything I can about Victory. I am planning on taking a cruise on it in July 2009. I heard that it is old and was wondering if anyone knew if there would be any updates to the ship by then.

We've done Canada three times, twice on the Victory. The last was this past July. Good for a quick getaway, but it's nothing like a Caribbean cruise. Love sailing out of NY though.

I have some pix below in my siggie.

Victory

We sailed on the Victory last November and had a great time.
After sailing on the Paradise (while it was still non-smoking) I concluded that I really like the larger ship.
The Victory had just been refitted for a few weeks and everything sparkled. Our dinners were at the two-level Pacific dining room, and we had a table for 4 on the second level. To me this was perfect because we were joined by old friends whom we don't see as often as we like and conversation was great.
Dinners were great: presentation, variety, quantity of food, and our waiters were terrific. When we saw them around the ship at breakfast or during the day, they always waved or otherwise greeted us.
The cruise director and his staff were also great and we spoke with them around the ship. We participated in a few trivia games (won a ship on a stick) and this made the cruise more enjoyable.
We had an inside cabin, and for me there was really no difference between inside and non-balcony outside. Room was cleaned, beds turned down each night, towel animals left, and ice was available.
The new big-screen tv still had some kinks that needed to be worked out, and I am sure it will be fine. I was looking forward to the Monday night football game, but it was not available. Can you imagine watching it on a jumbo-tron, sitting around the pool with cool ocean breeze? Terrific.

There were 2 fairly large pools, and hot tubs. The hot tubs were always crowded and I would have liked them to be warmer. We were never not able to find chairs nearby. Food seemed to be available in the Lido area all the time, but for some reason the Chinese window was not open. The coffee and deserts in the cafe were very good and prices were reasonable. I also liked the casino which was not crowded, and I saw a few slot winners. I played roulette and actually won a little money.

The lounges and music offerings were varied and enjoyable.

Last summer I read about the Canadian cruises on the Victory and reviews were good. I'd like to take this cruise sometime in the future.

spotler mentioned that the victory had a big screen tv by the pool? Is this correct? I thought the victory did not have movies by the pool. What do they show on the TV? And is this anything like "Movies under the stars"?

The big screen was just installed during its last refurbishment in the fall.
