Carnival Photos .... any other little known facts?
I still have not written a raving review for the cruise last year on the Celebration (my first wonderful cruise). I am now booked for a cruise this summer but I want to pass along a little info...
I got suckered in to buying about 200 dollars worth of photos.... they were so nice! Anyway, I was told that the photos could not be duplicated / scanned to print. so I bought multiple copies of the photos
Each photo must be purchased in 8 x 10 size before you can purchase other sizes (this is how they make money.... $20 per 8 x 10)
Anyway, the point is that if you choose to purchase photos, they are completely scannable and able to be duplicated from any personal or photo scanner/printer (CVS, Walmart, etc.) so if you buy....only buy 1!
We, too, fell for the pretty pics on our first few cruises.
Now we avoid the back up as we leave the ship and we only purchase the pics from formal night. We also like the pictures done in crystal.
Carnival does need to do something about the very crowded spaces they have the photo section in. It is soooo crowded that we do not go to look at any of the pictures.

20 years ago we had Johnny Cash, Bob Hope and Steve Jobs. Now we have no Cash, no Hope and no Jobs. Please don't let Kevin Bacon die.
We always purchase our embarkation photo. Sometimes a formal night pose of our family. I am purchasing less now because of size as well as price. I think they should go back to 5x7 size and charge $5 a piece. I think they would sell a lot more photos.
I don't like the trend of larger, more expensive photos. The 8x10s are difficult to pack and I worry about them getting creased before I get home.
It's a shame to see the hundreds and hundreds of photos left in the gallery for disposal.
I was recently told by "Walgreens" that they have on file the release from Carnival with permission to copy any of their ship photos. They copied an 8X10 for me for about $2 each! Sure beats the price aboard ship for multiple copies.
I told my sister that "Walgreens" had this arrangements and she went to her local store and they said they had never heard of it. I told her to just go to Walmart or somewhere that they are not standing over you and just copy them. I had a friend at Kinko's make copies and then put them on disk. I try not to buy that many but they come out so darn nice. So now I avoid taking them as much as possible so that I am not tempted.

My mom bought the embarkation photo from last years cruise. We didn't bother to stop when they said it's photo time, we wlaked past. I don't like my photo being taken, so I avoid it....
I remember my first cruise they made them all standard 4x6 & 5x7, and if you wanted bigger you had to request it.
The only pics not scannable are the school (Grade 1-12). My high school proofs were all stamped "Proof." My post secondary ones I paid a $40 sitting fee and had around 10 photos taken with no obligation to buy. Naturally, they used this photo session as a teaching tool for the Photograpy technology students as they were taking the pictures and adjusting the lights and such.....I took the pics to Walmart and made it into a 8x10...about on of the only pics I willingly say for.....

I sdpent about $75 on 4-5 carnival photos but next time I will have a wanter or someone at the next table take meal photos of my table, etc. and do the same for them. If we all just take our own photos perhaps they will reduce the ridiculous prices on theirs. Of course, they are giving cabin space, meals, etc. to these photographers, etc so they have to make the money back by charging exorbitant prices. Plus, there are so many unclaimed photos, I think a lot of the are really poor quality. I think our digital photos are better anyway.
yes walmartin ohio said they never heard of this arrangement. we phoned carnival and asked for the release and they faxed it right over. only thing is it said for suvenir items only. it was rejected at walmart but walgreen accepted it and said they will keep it on file for two years.
The one trip we spent more on pictures than we did on beverages. That is really sad.
Husband put limit on last years trip and we stayed way below it. Decided to try using our own digital camera and having friends/others snap pictures of us.
Upon returning home we printed at local CVS and paid $1.99 for an 8x10. That was a great savings.
Decided to try it again this year. Can't wait.
Good luck all.

I work at a photo lab and the federal law will not let us sell pictures that have a copyright. The botom of the photos have a little c with a circle around in the ccl next to it. Which implies it is copyrighted. I am going to make sure to ask for a release so I can make copies at my local photo lab. I don't know if this info will help any of you.

I scanned, at home, the ones I bought on our cruise. I then resized some of them and printed them on my printer at home. Some I left at the 8x10 size and the color of the ones I printed at home are just as good as the ones they made on the ship. Our Walgreens didn't have a release. So I just did it myself. I don't buy all the photos they take, but do get the embarkment one and a couple from formal nights when we dress up. I don't mind buying those because otherwise we would never have photos of ourselves dressed up.

My local walmart would not copy the photos even with my copyrite release. However I went to my local Ritz camera shop and the manager said " you read the copyrite statement , and agree with it, when you scan your photos you assume the liability for your actions. It is not if the photos will scan it is a copyrite issue. The photographer has the copyrite to his photos , as do you to photos you take, any unauthorized copying is a voilation of copyrite laws.
That said, who honestly thinks that Carnival will check with every photo lab to see if anyone has copied their photos without permission?

I always purchase the embarkation photo, it's nice to post it as the first pic in the photo album (does anyone do photo albums anymore?). I also purchase 2-3 pics from formal night. I bring the 8 x 10 photos to Walgreens, Kinkos or Walmart, scan, make jpegs and resize for framing. I love the 8 x 10's, but geez, I only have so much room for them. I resize to 5 x 7's and email the jpegs to friends to see.
But y'all are so right about the scandalous price Carnival charges! The pic charges amounted to more than the liquor bill.

They didn't take our pic for the embakation photo. This was our (my sister and I) first cruise too. My girfriend who went with us was upset, because that's the one pic she already knew she wanted to purchase.....
Walgreens by me would not allow me to copy mine. I always purchase one formal night pic and the one getting off at the islands. I purchase the photo coupons ahead of time to have them prepaid for my budget. I have to look into this Carnival release you all are taking about to get reprints made because my Walgreens said no reprints.
Also, be advised, that the photographer on the Legend tried to pull a fast one on me. #1, his English was so bad, that I'm sure his comprehension of it wasn't much better, but I'm not making any excuse for his slick behavior. I had changed my mind about purchasing a dvd after he misrepresented himself about what it contained and when I told him that I didn't want it afterall, he tells me, "Too late, already charged." giving me the impression that I was stuck with it. I signed for the purchases and walked away only to find out further down at another checkout desk that someone was returning a photo and the lady said, "No problem. I'll have it taken off your bill." So I marched right back to the guy and told him what I had just heard his co-worker say and that he better refund my money....pronto! I checked my statement after I returned to my cabin and it took about 45 minutes but the charge was removed. So watch these guys.....

I have learned after multiple cruises to take all the pictures we would like to and then each day go thru and look at them....if they are bad we just toss them and then on the last night we got get all the leftover pics and decide on just 2 of them. If you go one night and buy one from the night before then go back then next night you might have an even better photo then you will wish you had waited.

I bought a few nice pictures on our first cruise. When I got home I made copies on my home copier. I have an excellent HP Photosmart print/scan/copier. You could barely tell the difference between the orginal and the copy.
We saw the cheapest thing ever on our recent Fantasy cruise--a guy was placing each of his pictures on the floor and then taking a picture of the picture with his digital camera. I can just hear him explaining his shots to his friends back home "now here's a picture of the picture of formal night...". It was both hilarious and sad at the same t[/color]ime.
