Default Leaving from San Juan

I have heard when your ship leaves from San Juan the ships give announcements in English and Spanish.

Is that true? If so is it annoying? I have heard that a lot of the people that take cruises out of San Juan can't speak English. This doesn't make sense since I thought the language of Puerto Rico was English.

There were no announcements given in any language when we were last there back in September. If you have never been to Puerto Rico I'll let you know that you have nothing to fear, English is the offical language spoken on the island. Have fun, relax, we don't bite.

Spanish and English are the official languages of Puerto Rico, but Spanish is the dominant language.

English is spoken in all the tourist areas of Puerto Rico, but if you get out in the back country, they speak only Spanish.

We sailed the Destiny in Nov 07 and spanish and english were both spoken for the life boat drills and other announcements as well. Many of the guest spoke spanish, I guess because it is the language that they are more comfortable with, however on many occasions they reverted to english to accomodate our group of friends. All of the spanish speaking cruisers were very helpful and assisted me when I tried to use my limited skills of speaking spanish, it was fun and educational. The most enjoyable tilme occured when my wife and I were taught the finer points of dancing the salsa ................. bottom line is, we had a great time and truly enjoyed the bi-cultural experience. BTW, Barbados was an embarkation and debarkation port for many of the cruisers. I can honestly say that I had a great time and didn't feel annoyed by any of the spanish announcements. I've cruised on the Destiny twice and both times the announcements and the life boat drill were done in both English and Spanish. I didn't find it annoying at all.

lauera, most of the reviews I've read have notated this and i'd say of those I read 70% found it annoying. They do tend to speak spanish themselves, the cruisers. Considering we wanted a port intensive cuirse, we will live with a little annoyance.
