Default Back From Ecstasy 5 Day Cruise

I will post more later. In short it was a great cruise. The bad parts were embarkation, and debarkation. Both were the worst I have ever experienced. The rest was perfect. We were on the five day out of Galveston leaving on 1-21-08. I will post more later. If you have specific questions I will try to answer them.

Gary I,

Sorry to hear you had problems with the Embark/Debark on the Ecstasy. We were the on the Ecstasy leaving January 12 for five days. We arrived at the terminal around 10:50 a.m., and it looked like a ghost town. The lines were very short, and it looked like no one as waiting. We were on board by a few minutes after 11 a.m. The debark was the same no problems. There was a shuttle to the parking lot that was waiting, and we boarded with several other couples. It turned out we had all parked close together so there were only 2 stops in the parking lot. We were home about 25 minutes later. I know sometimes the fog in Galveston can delay the ships coming in. That can cause a lot of congestion and time delays. Anyway, sorry you experienced the delays. I hope you enjoyed your time on the Ecstasy. We had a great time on that cruise.

We were parked next to you at Progresso on the Fantasy. Did you go on an excursion while you were there? (we hit the Chichen Itza ruins--worth seeing once). Getting on at New Orleans went smooth, but debarkation was much slower than it should have been.

Here is the scoop on our experience. We arrived at EZCRUISE at about 12:00 noon on Mon. We were at the terminal by 12:30. The lines were huge. It snaked back and forth throughout the terminal. We finally got onboard about 3:15. We had our Funpass and all documents ready, but they still managed to have the wrong info in their computer. That did not really cause much of a delay. I heard that the ship was late getting into port due to rough seas, but not sure. As far as debarkation this was a new procedure to what we had experienced in the past. They issued everyone numbered tags to put on your luggage. They went from 1 to 25. The lower numbers started in the front of the ship and went up as you went aft. We had number 15. They started with 1-4 for self assist and worked their way up tp 25. After that they started with non-self assist. Again they started with the lower numbers. We were at the gangway at about 9:30. Then we picked up our luggage and dragged it through the line that snaked back and forth the lenght of th terminal at least 3 times. Then we finally got to the head of the line for customs. That took about 30 sec. It was noon whe we finally got out of the terminal and got a shuttle back to the EZ cruise parking lot. Maybe this is the way it always is in Galveston this was our first cruise from there.
Don't get me wrong we had a wonderful cruise, and I will cruise out of Galveston again as soon as possible. The rest of the cruise was the best we have been on. I can't say enough about the crew and the the ship.

I will post more later about our shore trips, and the jeep rental in Cozumel. We did the Merida city tour and enjoyed it.
More later.
Gotta get back to work
Gary

Hey Red,
We too were on the Fantasy 1/21 - 1/26. We did not do any excursions in Progresso but did take the bus to town to shop and eat. Did you enjoy your trip? New Orleans was easy on and off.

It was a good trip (maybe a little rough at times on the sea days). We were in "group 22" for the debarkation and we only saw 6 people behind us in line to get off the ship so we did a lot of standing in the glass hallway waiting for everyone else to find their luggage. On the upside, we had absolutely no trouble finding our bags as they were about the only ones left when we got there. Next time we'll be going the self-debarkation route, as our 2 young kids didn't make the 2 hours standing in line much fun.

Now that my wife's relatives that lived in New Orleans up until last month has moved to the midwest, we probably won't cruise out of there anymore, not because there is anything wrong with the port but because it's always a lot more expensive flight for us than any of the other ports so next time we'll probably cruise out of Florida instead. This was our first Carnival cruise and our kids didn't want to leave the boat. We will definitely be doing a January cruise next year but will go for 7 days and go our own way at port instead of doing the excursions.

Gary

That is not the norm for an Ecstasy embarkation. The ship must have been late and you arrived just as they began a later than normal boarding. Usually the Ecstasy goes very smooth.

I really can't really say about the debarkation as we/I always do the self-debarkation. We also walk to EZ Cruise and save the hassle of the shuttle. It's really an easy walk.

Maybe I'll see you on the Ecstasy some time, it's one of my favorites.

I was on the 21rst sailing of ecstasy, i was worried about lifeisschool since i never saw her!

Im having a hard time loving this cruise for the simple reason i only have the conquest to compare it too, and really there isnt a comparison, the conquest is a much superious ship in my opinion.

the one thing i truley HATED about the ecstasy was THE FOOD. Not so much in the dining room, the food was good (but nothing compared to conquest...you'd know if you ordered the escargo) but the lido deck buffet....OMG EWWWWWWWWWWWWW. The breakfast on lido was really good, but it was little things like totally watered down oatmeal one morning and good oatmeal the next. The lido cooks didnt seem to care or take pride in thier food. The desserts were almost non existant and terrible in lido, and 3 times the water didnt work when we tried to eat there so no drinks. We also had a bad time with dirty dishs in lido.

The good thing on the lido deck tho was the pizza was much better than conquest and they had a yummy sandwich bar. The only good burger i could get was in the dining room at lunch.

I liked the casino better on this ship but i lost a lot of money so im not sure whey i liked it, the slots were very tight, yet i kept trying, my fault lol.

Our cabins windows were soooo very dirty, i kept thinking someone would rinse them since we couldnt see a darn thing out of them, so that was a bit disappointing. Could have been due to being on level 4 (rivera deck) but still i was disappointed in no view at all.

The beds i thought were more comfortable by far on ecstasy.

Whether its my imagination or not, the ship seemed and felt half empty which im not complaining about lol, but i had to wonder if people were sick. I saw A LOT of sick people and had to worry if it was somthing other then sea sickness as i heard people were just as sick during docking at ports as in high seas. and the seas were HIGH. We rocked and rolled, but we never got ill at all, we were fine.

Still i learned a good lesson....i thought it was just the conquest that one night, but its not, the waitress confirmed it with me, never ever order the CHATAUBRIAND. its nasty on all ships lol. Our waitress was sweet and said she had it all over the world and its supposed to be good but not on carnival, so she recommended hte pork chops, and they were yummo.

The kids camp was a blast for my son, but im sad that next year at age 12 he will be to young for kids camp and will be with a group of teens, 12-14 (or 15) he meshes with kids younger than him since he's small and a bit childish, but yanno, i dont think he'll care to much, he LOVED THIS CRUISE BETTER THAN DISNEY! can you beleive that!

Yes debarkation and embarkation were a nightmare. Embarkation becuase people were debarking the same time we were all trying to embark. Took over 3 hours of living hell.

Debarkation was worse. We were number 23 and by the time i got a porter we were almost dead last. We didnt get to our car till after 1pm. We were ready to debark at 9am....I shoulda snuck thru and got in the porter line at number 10. They only had 14 porters for all those cruisers. They said they were short staffed????? I'm assuming htat is galvestons problem tho.

The best thing tho (and we didnt buy any but my friends did) is this is the ONLY carnival ship or any ship i guess in galveston that you can buy and bring back all the liquer you can carry. The first 2 bottles are free, but after that you pay 2.50/bottle tax. cheap stuff. Our friends bought 20 bottles of booze back I'll go to there house to drink now lol.

another issue i had is that we had 8pm dining and many of the good freebie drawings were held at 8pm most of the jewelry and stuff, everynight. I wondered why they thought htat was a good time, it cut out all the 8 and most of the 8:30 crowds out of the drawings.

Anyway, it was a 350 dollar cruise per person with a 1,000 sail and sign card. I got a beautiful Tanzanite and diamond ring for 700 that i could sell today for 1,200 easy. So Was it worth 2,000.....yeah, we had a great time. Did i enjoy my balcony on the conqest at 1400 for 2 with a 500 sail and sign better? yea...but i didnt take my son on that one, so that made my ecstasy trip PRICELESS.

I saw you a couple of times Liz. You were busy so I did not interrupt you. What Liz wrote proves we all see things different, and have different tastes. I found the opposite of what Liz reported. To me the highlight was the food. It was so much better than what we had on the Glory last Feb. I found the food in the dinning room to be great, and our service excellent. I ate breakfast at the Lido buffet every day, and when we had lunch it was usually at the Deli. I loved their Rueben sandwich. Maybe I just don't get out much.

I did manage to win $200 on the $.02 slots for the five days. Enough to pay my tips. Our S&S bill was about $300, and I don't feel like I missed anything. We only did one tour through the ship. That was the Merida city tour. It was interesting, historicaly informative. In Coz we rented a Jeep through Avis. Had a little trouble at first, but it all worked out OK. We dropped our DD & SIL off at Carlos and Chalies beach. Then my DW and I went to the Punta Celeron light house. I climbed to the top, and got some great pics. The drive there, along the beach is very scenic. We then drove down the less populated side of the island. It is very pretty, and not so crowded. Ther are a few shops and litte bars along the way. We stopped at one, and ordered a Margarita, and a beer. We were given chips and salsa. Our bill came to $6.00 US. Not a bad deal for what we got. We drove back to town filled up the Jeep with gas, and turned it back in at about 2:30. Avis gave us a ride back to Carlos & Charlies where we had a couple of drinke and watched all of the partiers before returning to the ship.

Bottom line is we thouroughly enjoyed the Ecstasy, and would not hesitate to sail her again.
