Default Panic mode-serious possible problems!

Ok, it could not have happened at a worst time, no not at all. We are in the midst of a nasty, nasty, nasty cold snap. I am talking cold. Yesterday it was -35C with a windchill down to -46C (meaning it felt like -46C). Today it was the same, except it felt more like -42C. The rest of the week is predicted to be around -25C with a windchill in the -30's.

Sunday the flight we were booked on was late leaving but arrived close to scheduled time

Monday the flight left late and the connecting flight left late and landed late, which would have meant an additional two hour wait for the next shuttle in Houston.

Tuesday--the first flight was cancelled......The connection left late, but arrived 10ish minutes late.

What does one do when the first flight to make the connection is cancelled. We have spent close to $6000 on this cruise and I have paid $250 for the hotel and transfer. I certainly don't want the airline to tell me "too bad so sad." I checked and there is other flights that go out, but the next closes flight leaves for Houston 34 minutes later, but only have seats available in Business class. We really don't have much choice as for flights, if they tell us we have to fly out the next day we will NOT make it to the port until after 4pm if there is no weather delays, and the ship will be gone if there is a delay of more than 15 minutes....

We are certainly in panic mode. We knew the cold weather was coming, but we had no idea that it was going to be as bad and possibly ruin our vacation...

ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try not to panic, chances are you will be fine, I'm usually the same way, just the way we are build I guess :-)

Hopefully, you purchased travel insurance for things like this that we have no control over?? I never book a cruise without getting it, just makes me worry less and I know I will be covered for all types of problems.

Don't worry, I'm sure you be fine and have a lovely cruise!

Good luck to you! Maybe could you get an earlier flight out? Give you more time ? I can empathize. In the past I've booked air separate and then worried about missing my cruise. Now I may pay through the nose for Carnival's air.
How can humans survive in -30 weather? Where I live 20 F is considered a hard freeze. The previous weekend the sky produced this white slushy stuff and some accumulated on the ground. Scared the dickens out of me

I understand your worries, my wife and I leave tonight and once we arrive in Los Angeles, we have 2.5 hours to change airlines and terminals. LAX airport is very large, and looking at our flight coming into LAX its either right on time or about 40 min late. If we miss our flight from LAX to Sacramento we miss the concert we are attending prior to the cruise, but we still dont want to miss it.

Just stay relaxed and hope for the best. Planes can fly in the cold, so unless its bad weather the, temp really should not have anything to do with your flight leaving on time or even being cancelled.

2.5 hours at LAX is PLENTY of time to to change airlines and terminals, even if your flight is 40 minutes late!
Even though LAX is a huge airport, it's one of the best laid-out terminal plan you will find anywhere. Easy, real easy and a piece of cake to go to any of the 8 or so terminals, the terminals are shaped like a U with continuous shuttle buses making loops.

Cap'n Smith-no, I haven't been travelling since Sunday. I stsill have to work this week!!!! I do have Friday off to prepare...

We have insurance and if there is a problem there is room two other flights leaving that go through Denver.

As far as cold weather goes, if you want to know how cold it can get, come on up to Canada and we'll show you cold weather with lots of snow. Today was considered "cold, but not too cold"...It's -27C.......When it gets colder than -35C (with the wind chill) I consider wearing my leggings under my pants and putting my scarf and mitts on....We Canucks are hardy folks...

No thank you.

Good luck with the flight. Glad to hear you have insurance, just in case!

Why are you in such a freaking panic then! Calm down and take it one day at a time. The way you worded your thread I thought the flight you "were booked on last Sunday was late" when you actually still have another 4 day or so to go! And as someone else said, planes do fly in the cold!

Hey Snoozeman, nice to see you posting, buddy.

This is your pilot speaking... and crying and swearing. And demanding to talk to God!

The co-pilot of a packed Heathrow-bound plane had to be dragged screaming from his cockpit after apparently suffering a mental breakdown in mid-air.

Horrified passengers on the flight from Canada saw the man being pinned down by fellow crew members as he yelled loudly and demanded to "speak to God".

The co-pilot was shackled by his ankles and handcuffed to a seat as the jet was forced to make an emergency landing at the Republic of Ireland's Shannon Airport.

At least they did not have it anywhere as bad as those passengers on that EygptAir 990 flight out of New York some years back in 1999. That crazy Egyptian pilot screamed and yelled "Allah U Akbar" (God Is The Greatest) as he put that Boeing 767 into a nose dive and slammed it into the frigid Atlantic, killing everyone on board.

Well LAX turned out to be a lot smaller then I expected it to be, we ended up walking from Terminal 3 over to terminal 1 to catch our flight to Sacramento for a George Strait concert with more then an hour or so to spare. Now im sitting in the terminal in Sacramento to fly back to LAX to get back to the original vacation planned... the cruise!

lol lol LAX small???? lol lol
as I said, it's one of the most well-laid out airports anywhere and while it is a veritable zoo, it does a great job of moving the hordes and crowds of passengers that go thru it each and every day.
Hope you had a great concert and you'll have an even better cruise. Enjoy the Riviera, I assume that is where you are headed, it will be a great change from AK weather.

I hope you have insurance on this trip ... which includes "trip interruption" coverage that will pay for things like this. I'm not trying to be the voice of doom, but I missed my first cruise at the port of embarkation and had to travel to Costa Rica to pick it up three days later. Same problem. Airline delays. Our plane lost an engine about an hour into the flight and had to divert to Baltimore. We sat on the ground there for about six hours while a repair crew from Dulles were bussed over to fix the plane.

Bottom line was that by the time we got airborne again, and reached Fort Lauderdale, the ship had already sailed.

Luckily I had trip interruption coverage which paid part of the expenses for my flight to Costa Rica and hotel stay for two nights.

Hopefully, you'll be okay, though ... but this is precisely the reason that a lot of folks head to the port of embarcation at least a day ahead of time. In my case, I can't always do this ... but then I usually can get direct flights from Philly to Florida. If I had to connect anywhere, though, I wouldn't even consider traveling on the day of embarkation. It's just too risky.

Blue skies and best of luck to you ...

I must confess my confusion with Centigrade and Fahrenheit temperatures. If 30 C =86 F, then how can -30 C = -22 F ? So when OP stated it was
-27C in Edmonton I was thinking it must be way worst than -27 F . I checked it out -27 c = -17 f. Which by the way is STILL cold !
Now I finally figured it out and remembered that 0 c= 32 f and in centgrade they down from the point of freezing to get -27 c which would be 27 degrees below freezing.
Obviously I live in a fahrenheit centered world .
