Default Smoking

I'm just a little worried about the smoking on ship, while I use to be a smoker three years ago I can't stand it now the smell even makes me sick to my stomach. Do I really need to be worried and are there places on the ship that are non smoking? Don't want to get to worried about this as this is my first cruise but should I be concern???

Unfortunately, this is truly a hit or miss situation.

Several years ago, Carnival implemented "designated smoking areas" which are suppose to stop folks from walking from venue to venue with a lit cigarette in their hand. 90% of the time it does. You still have the occasional idiot that sits right at a table with a sign that clearly says no smoking and smokes anyway...but those are rare.

Smoking is still allowed in the cabins. There is no smoking allowed inthe hallways, BUT smokers open their cabin doors to "get the stink" out of their cabin and flood the hallways with the mess. And there is a pretty good size space under the cabin doors, so that is you have a smoker next door (or even 3 doors down) and the "smoke gods are not with you"...it seeps under their cabin door and into your cabin. We have had to block the bottom of our door with towels before. And if you have a smoker on the side of your cabin where you share the bathroom vent...it can come into your bathroom from their cabin. Some of these vents can be closed.

We were on the Fantasy in August and it was bad. We were on the Victory in September and did not have a problem. We were on the Holiday in December and it was worse. We just sailed a Back to Back on the Imagination and did not have a problem at all.

I would consider the port you are sailing from. Some ports draw more smokers than others. (IMHO) New Orleans and Mobile are ports that we have experienced more smokers sailing out of, because they are cheaper cruises and tend to draw a Redneck Southern clientelle. (ok, folks before you freak out...I am both Redneck and Southern myself) I call these the Nascar ports. (Go Jr!!)

Also if you can book a longer cruise (5 to 7 days) as opposed to the 3/4 day cruises...you have less of a party atmosphere. Less drinkers usually equates (but not always) to less smokers.

The piano bar and casino is where the smoke is the worse. So I avoid these as much as I can. Some piano bar entertainers do not allow smoking directly at the piano (the seats that go around) if they are nonsmokers themselves. They will have the no smokig signs just around the piano...but the rest of the bar is a designated smoking area.

Just FYI, Royal Caribbean just implemented NO SMOKING in their cabins starting 01-01-08. But folks can still smoke on their balconies. Oceania has NO SMOKING anywhere except two small areas on the ship. So you may want to consider them as well. All of these cruise lines will provide a great vacation.

Happy Cruising!

I haven't sailed the Fantasy Class ships, but on the Destiny & Conquest class ships NOW
The Atrium Bar is totally non smoking. The Promenade and Promenade Bar are non smoking. The largest bar aft (where Keoraoke is held are non smoking. The smaller bar immediately forward to that bar - port side- are non smoking.

The bars where smoking is allowed and could be an issue.. The Piano Bar, the Cigar Bar (immediately foward of the dining room , aft, on Deck 4, the Sports Bar.

The Fantasy class ships handle it pretty well, UNLESS you get a neighbor that smokes. Once Carnival comes over to the "light" like RCCL about smoking in the cabins...there won't be much of a worry. Folks can just avoid the Piano Bar, Casino, Disco, Starboard side of outside Lido by the Pool and the Cigar Bar on the Fantasy class ships!!

The Fantasy class ships that have gone through the REFIT are even better because the bar that separates the Casino from the Promenade is nonsmoking .... where they are still smoking on the ships that have not gone through the change.

Loved the Imagination last week!!!

Should note that RCI does still alow smoking on the balconies. Honestly... I think they made the change now for 2 reasons.. 1. it's policitically correct at this time 1. to save cleaning costs ---- rather than any concern about passenger health

When we were on the Freedom at Thanksgiving, the people next to us were smoking on the balcony... a different type of tobacco though!
