Default Mega Ships? Are they getting TOO BIG?

I have noticed that Carnival is focusing on improving their current fleet rather than building new MEGA boats like RC.

My question is this… who agrees with me that a 220,000 ton MEGA cruise (i.e. Genesis) is “TOO BIG? and the best cruising happens in the former “monsters? sized around 100,000 tons?

Crowds are my biggest worry.

I think I would have to cruise the bigger ships, before I could make that claim. We are not get up early to grab a seat on the Lido type person. We like the different things to do on the ship, and these new mega ships are coming up with all kinds of fun things.

What I worry about id these bigger ships are getting to big for some of the ports that are so well liked by so many. It would soon limit where these ships could go.

I'm sure in that case they would add on to the ports or possible tender to that port instead of docking. As cruising gains more and more popularity there's gonna have to be the wow factor and that is what you get with the new bigger ships.

Having sailed on the Freedom OTS, the big ships seem to be designed to handle the extra amount of passengers. However some like the smaller ships even though they do not have the range of activities and amenities. The eye of the beholder , . . . . . . .

My kids love Carnival. But I would like to try a bigger RCCL ship. Maybe a couple summers from now when the kids are away at camp I'll take my wife to Europe on an RCCL bigger ship.

I've been on one Mega Ship (Voyager of the Seas) and I was pleasantly surprised how well designed this ship was to handle crowds. I had thought there would be lots of lines, but there really was no problems at all. In fact, it didn't seem as crowded as the Conquest.

I'll be sailing on the new Celebrity Solstice in February which is also a Mega Ship at 133,000 GT, but it has fewer passengers than most of the big ships. It'll be interesting to see how they all compare.

I am taking my kids for 2nd Mariner cruise but when I go by myself. I prefer the mid size ships, e.g. Enchantment, Sovereign and I am even giving Carnival Inspiration another try for the new pool decks.

I don't cruise to ice skate, play mini golf or climb rocks. I cruise to party at the pool during the day and enjoy the shows and piano bar in the evening. 8)

Dave it it on the head for me. I don't cruise to surf, skate, or rock climb. Thus, I avoid RCI ships because that is the focus of their newest ships. I go for the activities and for spacious cabins and FUN FUN FUN.....

I'd go on a 133 000 GRT ship, but that would be pushing it. I like the 100-110/113 000 tonne ship sizes. The Fantasy class ships would make me want to go on them because only the suites have balconies and I'd have to pay for a Cat 11/12 suite to get a balcony..I NEEDS a balcony, I can't do without one...Nothing better to wake one up than the sun and a strong breeze!!!....It also is a good hair dryer when you want to dry your hair fast.....

for me i don't care what size ship it is as long as i am not at work and on my way to some exotic port of call! our last cruise was on the celebration and we had a blast, i am prone to motion sickness but even on the small ship i was a-ok!

I have sailed on the Oasis of the Seas and I loved it so much that I have booked her sister shipe the Allure of the Seas.

I found the ship was very exciting and everything was well organized. Embarkation and dis-embarkation were very smooth. We never felt crowded at all. There is much to do onboard and when we got to the ports of call it did not feel any different than any other ship.
We had an easier time finding chairs by the pool than we have founf on smaller ships.

No, the ship is not too big.

After checking prices with RCI new ship, Bigger also means more $$$$$ to cruise. Not alittle more alot more. Thats just the starting price. Then all the extras. We can go on CCL for 2 weeks maybe even 3 weeks if we find a good price for a balcony what the cost came to for one week. To the people who want to spend the bucks, have fun.

funny, i'm going in the opposite direction:o:o:o...doing a maine windjammer family weekend cruise in august that holds 29 (grace bailey)..did a river cruise in the south of france last year that held 144 (princess de provence)...looking at doing a barge cruise out of venice next year that holds 20

the smooth jazz cruises are usually on an HAL (Westerdam) or this october on the Carnival Liberty that can hold about 3000

however, am seriously considering the CM group cruise on the Epic

the older i become, the smaller my choice of cruise vessels

We recently went on Celebrity Eclipse, this was the biggest ship we have been on & didn't seem big at all. We want more things to do than our usual "smaller" P&O ships, especially dining options.

I respect all your opinions.

But for us and our friends on our Oasis cruise last month, the ship was not too big. Now on the other hand the cruise was too short.
We had a great time on this cruise and we loved the Oasis so much that I have booked a cruise on her sister ship the Allure.
Let's be fair don't knock it untill you have tried it.

I, too, worry about the ships growing so large. I started crusing in '88 and the RCCL Song of America was considered a large ship for it's day. However, we were in port in St. Marteen last March with the Oasis. It is a beautiful ship! I was impressed. At his point I guess it's all about brand loyalty for me. I love the mini-suites on Princess and they are the best bargain at sea. I'll consider a mega-ship if I end up doing a last minute booking. That'a how I've ending up on Carnival four times. Last minute availability.

Why worry?? You can take em or not, but don't deprive those of us who loved them. I went once the Oasis and I am ready to go again.

If they keep getting bigger, I will have to stop cruising. My mobility issues just make the mega ships too difficult for me to get around. Got worn out just going to dinner on the Glory, and she is not even near the current supersized ships. For now, I'm fine with all of you who want to go on the big ones, since that should drop the prices a tad on the older ships, which I like.
And, the ports are getting overrun. It is not just a matter of getting the pax into the ports. Most of the ports are just not fun when overwhelmed with thousands of people. So, YES, I am worried.
