I am thinking about purchasing a Virgin Mobile prepaid cell phone just to use while on the cruise ship and in Nassau Bahamas. Have anyone used them or suggest what I should do. I currently have sprint and they said that their rates are 2.49 per minute on ship and on island $2.29
You have to ask the provider what their roaming charges are... not just their per minute rate. The roaming charges could add significant fees to your calls.
I have AT&T wireless, before we cruise we call and add the international travel plan. It is $2.50 per minute on ship and $0.59 per minute on land. When we got home we just called and had it taken off. It cost $4.95 to have the plan added for the trip.

Did you contact Virgin about the roaming rates?
I would love to get a US Virgin cell phone. We have
a Canadian one and love it. It will not work in the US.
Thinking of purchasing a US one for our cruise.
T-mobile told me no additional charges for use on shore. I don't pay roaming ever. If I use it on ship for a voice call, it will get pricey, but I can send text messages that will not be any extra within my plan of 400 per month. I text a lot, and no, I am not a teenager. I just think its convenient. The group I am going with all use their cellphones on the ship to stay in contact. Sounded fantastic to me, especially since I still don't have a room mate. Sigh....

Jayne, sounds like a great idea to text. Unfortunately that is not an option for us. My Dad has no idea how to text. I want a US cell that will work
as my parents will be looking after our four year old daughter for
the week.
Hi Redheadsmama....I can see why this is important to you. And I bet that four year old is a red head!! Where are you going to cruise? I see you are in Ontario, so I would guess you are going south, and I am heading up your way!!

Yes she is a red head lol. We are heading to Miami then doing
a Western Caribbean Cruise.
Redheadsmama, big family group doing inside north passage with carnival in june 09. This forum is the only thing that is keeping me from driving my family crazy!! They are all seasoned travelers of one type or another, and I am just full of questions. I know they are going to handle all the details, but that doesn't help me from having questions!! The anticipation is wonderful, so the forums will get the brunt of my excitement. BTW, I live in Alabama. No snow, hardly ever. A dusting is an event. In fact, last week it was chilly and I think" and I am going to Alaska....I am cold now!!!"

For those who use AT&T, you can go to the following link and check your rates and make sure your phone will be one that works. Not ALL at&t phones will work on the ship/outside the states.
Don't forget to call and have them activate International Roaming or Long Distance (as previously posted)
As Much as we would like to put our phones away for the vacation, we do have children staying home and well..... they just might need Mom or Dads advise... and well..... Mom just might have to call to say G'night and sweet dreams and ....... I might just have the urge to call my sister to say.... neener neener neeeeeeener

Exactly.
I don't remember hearing the term "cell phone" before 1996.
Besides, the ship has phones and other means of communication in case of emergencies.
Check on the AT&T Go Phone. It's prepaid. I just don't know about the international plan. I had Sprint on my last cruise and it worked fine in port, but when we left port we had no service....and I had the international plan! I just changed to AT&T (so ex wouldn't be able to get detailed phone bills on my account!) and I've been told it works well at sea.

This is great to know... this way incase my phone has "No Service" while at sea... kids can still reach us if they need or WANT to
not to worry, no one will have to grit their teeth and listen to me screaming in the phone.... can you hear me now? how bout now? NOW? Helloooooooooooo CAN YOU HEAR ME? I do recognize that others are wanting to get rid/away from.. TVs, computers, phones, PS2/XBox's to enjoy their vacations.... and they will do so... Me however... I will enjoy our vacation knowing that if my kids need to reach me or if I want to say gnite i love you.. We will be able to do so.... Being a Mom, I would never be "OUT OF REACH" from my kids.... and even tho my kids didn't always like me asking where/ when, with who and for how long when they were young... they still respect and understand why mom wants to know when they are crossing the border, on the way home, got home safe and sound... awwwwwww makes for a great night sleep.. knowing your kids are safe and sound (even when they don't live with you anymore)
