Default Names on passport vs names on cruise docs

I cames across an issue that I thought I would bring up here.
I booked our cruise with a TA and afterwards applied for our passports. Well when you apply for passports they ask for your full name (first middle and last) well when you book on Carnivals website there is no place for middle names so therefore the name on the passport and the name on the booking info (airline tickets and boarding passes) will not match. Myself and my TA were concerned that this could cause problems with flights and boarding so we had them change it to match the passports at a tune of $50.00. Now my issue is this if you can't put the middle name in on Carnivals website and if I had booked that way wouldn't that be an issue that Carnival should fix and not charge for there for should not be charged for through a TA either?
It's only $50.00 but I thought it would be interesting to see what others think.

A middle name or initial is not required for air or sea travel. It is the first and last name that counts.

Your TA did not know this? Get your $50 back and get a new TA.

My Passports has my name as John Allen Smith III. Airline tickets and cruise documents have it as John Smith.

Never had an issue with it; both on domestic and international travel (air and sea).

My passport has first middle and last name and my
airline tickets and cruise docs just have my first and
last name.
Checked back at the last two cruises I took and they
are the same way.
You always have a second proof of who you are on
you at all times so its not a problem.
Your travel agent should know that too..
So you are good to go.
Hope you did not spend the 50.00 and if so make your
TA give it back.

I am "in charge" (no snickering please) of the group I am traveling with.

I did have to send a letter to the Airlines Group Department when I sent in our final payment. The names on the list had to be exactely as it appears on their Passports. This is to obtain our tickets when we arrive at the airport on the day we fly out of Pittsburgh.

Never were any of us asked to put our Full Names on anything from Carnival.

We are working with a Vacation Planner from Carnival, so that may be why she knew what to do, where a Travel Agent may not??

That is to ensure that each person gets the proper ticket. The ticket itself will only have the first and last name on it.

This is common when buying group or bulk tickets.

Yes, that is what I told everyone who is in my group.

They must have their Passport and the group number when they get to the Airtran ticket counter. That will insure them that they are the correct person.

Thanks
Darlene

I have never in my life used my middle name. The only place it has ever appeared is on my passport. I use my first name middle initial and last name. I agree with Sammy and Irish Shark, the first and last names must be the same on the travel docs as on the passport that's all.

If your Passport says Richard Alan Smith and your ticket says John Smith, you have a problem. If your ticket says Richard Smith I think you are good.

omgosh! you paid 50.00 to change your names on the docs??? Your TA had you do this??? She was concerned??? Did she even bother to call Carnival and ask if it was an issue before doing something that cost you that much money?

I'm with the others...sounds like you have a stupid or at the very least, an inexperienced TA. Good grief!

Sounds like you need to give your TA a slap on the wrist! Passport and documentation knowledge is a must have. As everyone else has said you just need your legal first and last name on air/cruise tickets. For example if your name is Deborah and you put Debbie then that may be an issue depending on how picky the airline, the TSA, and the cruise line want to be. You're taking quite a chance over a simple mistake if you don't pay enough attention lol.

So get that $50 back and save it for some fun on the ship!

This may be completely unrelated to your problem, but my boyfriend goes by his middle name. When he does all his travel docs, his first name is put on everything so that it matches his driver's license, passport, ect.

On the other hand, one of my friends has two last names that she goes by. One is her biological father's and the other is her step-father's. Some of her stuff has one last name and other official docs have the other. It's confusing.

That sucks that you had to change the names for 50 bucks. I too feel like you should get your $$ back b/c the TA should have known this.

No doubt, It is time to find a new travel agent!!! Then when you do find a new one, let us know the name of the one you got rid of so that none of us make the same mistake and use this agent.
