Default Departure time from Key West

Why is the departure time from Key West so early in the afternoon (usually around 2:00)? There is so much to see and do there, I wish the departure time could be a little later (maybe 5:00 or 6:00 ?). I'm sure there's a logical answer to this. Does anyone know?

We were told that the residents of Key West do not want some huge ship cluttering up their view of the wonderful sunsets that their home enjoys.

True? I dunno.

It is also a long haul to Cozumel from Key West...maybe that is a factor.

We were on the Fascination in April 2004.

It largely depends on your itinerary, most cruises calling on Key West are making their first stop on a 4 day W Carib itinerary so they need enough time to get over to your next stop in good time. However I have heard folks stay later but it depends. Just get up early and don't waste any time! I adored Key West and would give anything to extend my time there, can't wait to be back in August

Dunno but I wish they would make Key West an evening stop. Seems like at party time town.

To Joe323: We all know it's a party town! It was my guess that the departure time is mid-afternoon so we don't all turn into parrot-heads and get wasted on margueritas But what the heck! I'm not piloting the ship!

You can party with a 2pm departure, just do the Pub Crawl excursion four bars in one excursion at lunchtime. CD on my last cruise put it best: you won't remember it all but you had a great time! lol
