Default Infirmary question

In the event that you may need medication, specifically an antibiotic, is the ship doc able to give you it?

Default Re: Infirmary question

They don't carry everything....but they have many prescription/OTC drugs. Some...limited quantities. If you have a prescription, best you carry it with you.

My son went to see the ships docotor. He had an ear infection the days leading up to our trip. Dummy mommy forgot the Amoxicillan in the fridge at home. We went to the infirmary and he was able to get the antibiotic. It seemed that there were quite a large selection of medications. The nurse said they were stocked for almost anything. The visit to tell us what we already knew, that my son had an ear infection was $60. bucks. The Antibiotic itself, 11. bucks.

I forgot my thyroid medicine once.
Dr. said they usually have "run of the mill" medications onboard.

My suggestions is that, if you have a common type infection that reoccurs (for example, I am prone to sinus infections), get your doctor to write you a prescription, have it filled and bring it with you.

I usually travel with Zithromax and Arythromycin - the former for the sinus infection and the latter for tooth infections that I occassionally get.

Of course, now that I am on the northern side of 50, I have one suitcase dedicated to just pills I take with me.

We bought an off brand of Pepto Bismol from the infirmary for $10. Understandable it was expensive, it isn't like I could have gone to Walgreens to get it. But, when we came back, we saw the same exact off brand, same size bottle, at Dollar Tree for $1.00 Now that is what I call a profit margin.

For the last three cruises I always packed cold meds, flu meds, upset stomach meds, aspirins and just about any other over the counter meds in travel package size just in case. Never had to use any of them but I keep the plastic bag stocked full when we travel just in case. One time I forgot my Rx for my knees that get inflammed and did without the meds for the entire week and was very miserable due to not being able to walk much without them so this weekend I placed in my empty bag for my upcoming cruise an extra bottle to take so it never happens again.
